CUNY Academic Advising Specialist (Silberman School of Social Work) in New York, New York

POSITION DETAILS

The Assistant Director (Academic Advising Specialist) will report to the Student Life Manager. The Assistant Director will oversee and supervise part-time academic advisors. The successful candidate will coordinate and monitor advisement activities, be responsible for developing and implementing cohort specific activities to orient new students to the academic program, and serve as the liaison to field education, the internal registrar, and enrollment services. Will work with the faculty to identify and serve students' needs for academic enhancement and for increasing student success, especially with vulnerable populations. The Assistant Director will coordinate regular review conferences of the student population in order to assist students with academic/field performance issues. The Assistant Director will, in addition, meet with students individually and assign them to an academic advisor for follow-up.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferably, the candidate will possess an MSW degree with years of experience in an academic setting; familiarity with the demands of social work education. The Assistant Director should be able to act autonomously and possess skills to work with faculty and administrative staff. Applicants should understand issues of accommodation as determined by the School's Office of Accessibility. The Assistant Director should have strong interpersonal and problem solving skills, some supervisory experience, computer skills, and the ability to develop and maintain data for the department and the school.

  • Ensures students are provided with consistent, accurate, and prompt advising services, coordinating with academic departments

  • Develops orientation programs to engage and retain students and instructs students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies

  • Conducts assessments to strengthen advisement programs

  • Organizes and facilitates training for faculty advisors

  • Develops print and online communication materials

  • May supervise office operations and budget

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
