POSITION DETAILS

Borough of Manhattan Community College seeks an experienced individual who has the ability to work independently and as part of a successful team serving a diverse student population in an urban setting. The ideal candidate will provide a supportive environment and have the ability to easily build rapport and professional relationships with students, staff and the college community.

Reporting to the Director of Academic Advisement and Transfer or her designee, the successful candidate will work with the student services area, including Registrar and Testing; deliver and coordinate academic advisement and transfer services to a diverse urban community college population; and work with a large number of students on an individual and group basis.

Including the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initially meet with students and refer them to appropriate support services, if necessary;

  • Assist students with interpreting their CUNY placement scores and the remedial course sequence;

  • Assist with the delivery of transfer information sessions;

  • Provide academic audits for students preparing to apply for graduation;

  • Provide academic and transfer advisement, using various media (including e-advisement);

  • Conduct seminars and workshops on topics such as Liberal Arts Careers; Time Management; and Preparing for Transfer, etc.;

  • Coordinate trips to senior colleges for students looking to transfer;

  • Work closely with Admissions’ and Registrar’s Offices on recruitment and retention projects;

Evening and weekend hours required. We are seeking two (2) Day Advisors and two (2) Evening/Weekend Advisors. Please identify your preference in your submission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree required.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Experience advising community college students.

  • Ability to communicate program requirements effectively to students.

  • Excellent written and communication skills.

  • Experience working in special programs and/or with a cohort model.

  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.

  • Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.

  • Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process

  • Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services

  • Monitors and evaluates students' educational progress by conducting academic progress audits

  • Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
