CUNY Academic Advisor - New Student Experience Center in New York, New York
The New Student Experience Center (NSEC) is the primary advising office for undeclared first year and transfer students during their first year at City College. NSEC practices a holistic and proactive (intrusive) brand of advising. We make it a priority to develop a relationship with each student so that the advising experience is as beneficial to the student as possible. NSEC will provide students with academic advising, personal coaching, a welcoming transitional community, career/major exploration events and individual career/major guidance. A primary goal of a student’s time with NSEC, is the development of an academic plan that will allow them to solidify their academic affiliation with a particular school or division if not a particular academic department or major.
Reporting to the Executive Director of NSEC, the Academic Advisor is an integral member of the New Student Experience Center. The Academic Advisor will:
Provide academic and personal advising to students assigned to their caseload and others as needed.
Maintain electronic and written advising records.
Attend weekly NSEC staff meetings.
Assist in the planning, development and delivery of the various workshops.
Participate in the selection and training of new advising staff.
Assist the Director and Senior Academic Advisors in preparing and writing year end and other reports.
Serve as liaison to one or more Division of Student Affairs; Student Services ; and School and Divisional advising offices.
Bachelor's Degree required.
Experience providing academic and personal advising in a college or university setting required experience with first year or transfer students preferred.
The Academic Advisor will be expected to staff occasional weekend events. Each advisor will be expected to work evening hours (until 6pm or 7 pm) at least one day each week.
Experience using electronic communication and social media in relation to advising and/or student support preferred.
Experience working with confidential materials and information required.
Experience with FERPA regulations preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications required.
Experience working in a Microsoft Exchange environment preferred.
Advanced degree in counseling, higher education, or related field preferred.
Experience with an on-line Student Information System required.
Experience with CUNYFirst (Oracle/PeopleSoft) preferred.
Fluency with a language in addition to English a plus.
City College experience preferred.

Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process
Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services

Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses
May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups
Performs related duties as assigned.
