FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The John Jay College Library seeks a skilled, innovative and knowledgeable Cataloging and Metadata Librarian.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Cataloging and Metadata librarian will work collaboratively to provide leadership and direction in emerging metadata practices, serving as the library's primary resource for traditional MARC contributions to OCLC and the City University shared integrated library system, as well as for non-MARC metadata, structure, and standards for our digital collections.
Supporting a CUNY senior college with a level five research collection in criminal justice and social sciences, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian will be responsible for composing original and complex contributed cataloging in all bibliographic and physical formats, including old and rare books, pamphlets and other items mostly relating to criminal justice housed in our Special Collections.
The librarian will ensure metadata integrity and usability of OneSearch, the primary system for finding books, articles, and other resources available to the John Jay community. Knowledgeable in web-scale discovery systems, the librarian will work closely with the CUNY Central Office of Library Services to tailor OneSearch to John Jay by leveraging customization options, addressing system issues, and responding to user feedback.
The librarian will also share responsibility with other library faculty for bibliographic instruction (includes reference and teaching) and for committee and department assignments.

All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.
For appointment as Assistant or Associate, a second graduate degree is required.
Minimum of three years of recent cataloging/metadata experience.
Experience in original and copy cataloging of a variety of bibliographic and physical formats.
Significant knowledge of and ability to apply the following cataloging tools: Resource Description and Access (RDA), the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2r),Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and MARC21
Experience or knowledge of other metadata standards, (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, MARCXML, etc.).
Ability to supervise, and to work in a team environment.
Ability to train staff and prepare effective training materials and other documentation.
Some knowledge of at least one other language in addition to English.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and collegially in a team environment and to exhibit flexibility in the face of changing needs.
Ability to pursue an active scholarly agenda and fulfill requirements for tenure.
Occasional weekend and evening hours.
Experience with developing metadata standards and recommendations for archival curation.
Experience with institutional repositories and/or digital libraries.
Knowledge of discovery tools and metadata practices supporting discovery.
Knowledge of MarcEdit.
Experience using emerging technologies for metadata management and delivery.
Academic library reference experience.
