CUNY Director of Finance & Administration (Finance Budget Director) - Graduate School of Journalism in New York, New York


The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, which began its 10th year of operation in September 2016, prepares students from a broad range of economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism at a time of rapid change.

As the profession reinvents itself for the digital age, the CUNY J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the tools to find stories and tell them effectively — using print, visual, interactive, and social media.

The school offers three degree programs: a Masters of Arts in Journalism, an M.A. in Entrepreneurial Journalism, and an M.A. in Social Journalism. Among its other cutting-edge initiatives, it is about to launch a unique Spanish-language subject concentration to train bilingual students interested in covering Hispanic communities in the U.S. and abroad.

The Director of Finance and Administration will report to the Dean.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develops and oversees the CUNY J-School tax-levy and non-tax-levy budgets;

  • Provides departmental budgets to department heads;

  • Oversees all financial operations including payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, and bursar functions;

  • Oversees asset management in accordance with university policies and procedures;

  • Develops annual financial plan with consultation from the Dean on projected hires and other strategic goals;

  • Serves in the grants officer role for all Research Foundation administered funds;

  • Serves as Chief Financial Officer for the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Foundation, Inc.;

  • Manages audit process for annual university audits, journalism foundation, and individual audits on programmatic grants;

  • Works with the current modules in CUNYfirst including the general ledger, accounts payable, HCM, ELM, and asset management and manages implementation of upcoming modules including student financials and payroll;

  • Collaborates with admissions, development office, and bursar’s office on allocation of scholarship awards and/or stipends;

  • Manages annual capital budget requests;

  • Manages mid-year and year-end closings, filing all required disclosures, reconciliations, and statements in keeping with the university controller’s office closing schedule;

  • Oversees all credit card transactions, reconciliation, and reclassification processes;

  • Serves on the Council of Business Managers, Administrative Council, and as audit liaison;

  • Develops financial policies and procedures in accordance with university policies and NYS guidelines; develops and implements policies, procedures, and practices pertaining to all financial matters affecting the school;

  • Plans and achieves strategic financial and performance goals and objectives, and prioritizes them consistent with the schools’ mission and vision;

  • Serves as the School’s internal control officer as well as, serves as chief liaison with internal and external auditors;

  • Serves as the chief liaison with vendors and service providers;

  • Deploys resources in pursuit of maximum competitive advantage;

  • Incorporates automated processes to promote efficiency and effectiveness;

  • Serves as an integral part of the senior management team and participates in the decision making process;

  • Ensures compliance with a broad range of University-wide policies and procedures;

  • Collaborates with University–wide staff to identify opportunities for process improvements; and

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.


A preferred candidate should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance and/or accounting field.

  • MBA or Master's degree in a financial and/or accounting field.

  • Higher education experience.

  • Experience working with New York State agencies.

  • Proficiency in PeopleSoft, Banner, and FundEZ.


Directs the budgeting function of a College or major program as well as related accounting operations.

  • Formulates, prepares and oversees financial plans and budgeting processes

  • Manages all financial reporting and compliance activities, including preparation of financial statements, statistical reports, and funding determinations

  • Liaisons with internal and external financial auditors as well as various College, University and governmental representatives

  • Oversees analytical reporting and provides strategic financial guidance to support decisions regarding resource allocations and operational planning

  • Manages professional staff responsible for budget projections, allocations and transactions

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
