CUNY Director of Student Leadership & Campus Life in New York, New York


Stella and Charles Guttman Community College at CUNY seeks a Director of Student Leadership & Campus Life to increase awareness of institutional and community resources and services for students, and to build a comprehensive program that enhances student leadership and skills that consistently attract a high achieving student body poised to lead and positively impact their communities. This program will include new curricular and co-curricular offerings with a focus on the development and implementation of a leadership certificate program. Reporting to the Dean of Student Engagement & Success, The Director of Student Leadership & Campus Life is a senior member of the Student Engagement team at Guttman Community College who will provide visionary direction for the institutional student leadership program and campus life initiatives. The Director oversees the Student Government Association, serves as the Student Association advisor, and supervises the functional areas of Student Conduct & Community Standards and Single-Stop within the Office of Student Engagement. The College is seeking an energetic individual grounded by student development, leadership and learning theories and practice, and experienced in leadership program coordination and direction.

Additional key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop a comprehensive leadership program which incorporates experiential learning opportunities for emerging and experienced student leaders.

  • In collaboration with other Guttman offices, recruit, train, and coordinate a Leadership Advisory Board that will assist in the development and facilitation of the Leadership Program.

  • Provide oversight and assist in planning and executing student activities and College-wide events and special projects including coordination of the annual leadership awards ceremony, off-site leadership retreat, student involvement in CUNY Intramural/athletic events, and holding orientation workshops for student organization officers.

  • Partner with the Office of Peer Mentoring on various student workshops and initiatives to provide strategic support and promote student leadership and organizational excellence.

  • Collaborate with faculty and the Office of Assessment & Technology to develop and enhance a two-year leadership curriculum.

  • Within the Office of Student Engagement, oversee the creation, implementation, and measurement of learning outcomes and effectiveness of departmental programming and activities.

  • Directly facilitate and manage all co-curricular student activity programs and events to include registering student organizations, assisting with the creation of new student organizations, meeting on a regular basis with student organizations to coordinate or co-sponsor campus events, and oversight of the campus game room.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff who are designated as student organization advisors to provide guidance pertaining to college and university rules and regulations.

  • Direct the management and processing of all event applications for on-campus and off-campus activities of student organizations; serve as on-site administrator for all student-sponsored programs including after-hours events; and accompany students to off-campus trips as necessary.

  • Provide oversight and assistance with the planning and execution of all orientation programming, commencement and convocation.

  • Coordinate, oversee, attend and participate in student-based conferences and workshops on the local, regional, and national level.


Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

The successful candidate will also possess the following:

  • At least eight years' experience in student affairs, activities, orientation, recruitment and admissions student leadership, student government, campus recreation or community service

  • Substantial leadership and direct coordination of major complex events on a college campus

  • Experience with the supervision of employees and students

  • Outstanding organization and communication in both written and verbal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with multiple administrative units throughout campus

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusiveness and cultural competence; experience working with underrepresented students

  • Experience and understanding of current issues and developments in judicial affairs, services for students with disabilities, and student retention

  • An understanding of student development theory and assessment, including risk management practices and procedures, and a comprehensive approach to student life

  • Must be flexible as position requires evening and/or weekend hours and some travel


Directs planning, program development, and administration to support access, retention, multicultural, and other student affairs objectives.

  • Develops plans for, and leads a student development services unit which comprises a variety of services and programs

  • Collaborates with academic affairs professionals and other in supporting retention and building a comprehensive learning environment that fosters the intellectual, psychological, social, leadership and recreational development of a diverse student population

  • Assists senior management in providing leadership, developing policy, conducting strategic planning, and representing student affairs in various professional activities

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the portfolio of student services in supporting divisional and College-wide goals; oversees data collection, tracking, and reporting systems

  • Manages fiscal and human resources; may oversee grant management activities for selected programs

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
