CUNY Research Specialist, Central Office of Student Affairs in New York, New York
The Office of Special Programs (OSP) at CUNY’s Central Office of Student Affairs oversees The Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) Program at eleven senior colleges, and the College Discovery (CD) Program at six community colleges. OSP programs share the goal of helping students who face significant barriers to success (e.g. low-income status, high school academic performance that does not reflect full potential, etc.) both access a college education and earn a degree once they have matriculated. In a joint effort with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment (OIRA), which provides data for decision support to the Chancellery, and conducts a wide variety of quantitative analyses to guide policy and to evaluate academic and administrative processes, this Research Specialist position will focus on providing data support for the programs and services administered by the OSP, particularly CUNY’s opportunity programs (SEEK and College Discovery), CUNY TRIO programs, and the Single Stop programs.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Special Programs, the Research Specialist supports analytical and institutional planning efforts at the University level by designing and conducting studies of post-secondary educational outcomes focusing on OSP programs. The Specialist presents these findings to key personnel in the Chancellery, OSP, external stakeholders, and legislators; recommends, designs, and manages additional analyses for decision support; and presents findings to campus-based program staff including Directors and Coordinators as needed.
Other duties include but will not be limited to the following:
Implements quantitative research projects, from developing appropriate methodology to interpreting and disseminating the results to a variety of audiences.
Consult with management on designs studies and develops datasets.
Performs survey research, statistical modeling and analysis.
Creates and presents technical documentation, tabular and written reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree and four years’ relevant experience required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will possess the following experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Four years’ experience analyzing, manipulating and extracting data from databases, particularly using Oracle products;
An advanced degree in a directly related discipline is strongly preferred, and may substitute for up to two years of the required experience;
Experience with both qualitative (e.g. focus groups, interviews, case studies, etc.) and quantitative research methods (e.g. generating descriptive statistics, experimental, quasi-experimental, and non-experimental research designs, etc.);
Proficiency with statistical software including, but not limited to, Stata, SPSS, SAS, and/or R;
Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office products, as well as proficiency using administrative, financial or academic programs, systems or databases;
Detail oriented and accurate with strong analytical, research, evaluation, and writing skills;
Proactive, flexible, and customer focused with strong interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with diverse members of the University community and external constituents;
Demonstrated commitment to populations served by OSP programs;
Strong presentation and group facilitation skills; and
Strong organizational and follow-through skills to develop and execute work plans, prioritize work, manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Oversees collection and assessment of data for Institutional Research purposes.
Compiles, maintains, and analyzes institutional data in various formats
Produces reports and metrics based on department's needs; responds to time-critical ad-hoc requests
Loads, extracts, edits, and evaluates data for reporting and analytics
Maintains selected databases and document libraries, updating and ensuring data quality and accuracy
May participate in internal and external surveys as needed
May consult with others in designing methodology for research projects
Performs related duties as assigned.
