GENERAL DUTIES

Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

  • Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment

  • Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisitions

  • Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff

  • Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories

  • Maintains safety and hygiene standards

  • Documents laboratory activities

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Civil Engineering Department of the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York is seeking a Senior College Laboratory Technician specializing in the areas of water and wastewater quality with emphasis in biological domestic wastewater treatment. The Senior College Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the effective operation of the Environmental Engineering Laboratory, setting up and assisting with the process of experimental activities associated with both undergraduate and graduate level courses. The Senior College Laboratory Technician will actively participate in ongoing research projects, and assist/mentor students in independent studies and research.

The Senior College Laboratory Technician will report to the Chairperson of Civil Engineering at The City College of New York. The Senior College Laboratory Technician will, in addition to the duties above, be responsible for:

  • Maintaining NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) Accreditation.

  • Providing training to incoming undergraduate and graduate students on the proper conduct of analytical methods and record keeping in compliance with NYSDOH certification requirements.

  • Supporting ongoing research activities and, in collaboration with faculty members, developing project proposals for external funding.

  • Supporting PhD students in the laboratory phase of their research activities.

  • Providing laboratory support to both undergraduate and graduate students in setting up experiments, demonstrating analytical procedures and guiding them throughout the process of the experiments as needed.

  • Managing the Environmental Engineering Laboratory, including purchasing, maintaining inventory of supplies, and arranging for servicing of all analytical instruments on a regular basis.

  • Preparing laboratory assignments for instruction and interacting with the instructors and students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. This position may also require the ability to supervise others.
