CUNY Chief Librarian in Queens, New York

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Queens College of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a Chief Librarian who will have responsibility for all aspects of the management, planning, and development of the Rosenthal Library (main collection), the Art and Music Libraries, and Special Collections at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. The Chief Librarian is also the academic Chairperson of the Library Department, with oversight of librarians who are members of the college’s teaching faculty.

Reporting to the Provost and as a member of her Council, the Chief Librarian will articulate a vision for the contemporary academic library in the context of the College’s commitment to public service, accessibility, and diversity in an urban environment. This will translate into leadership to meet the rapidly changing information and research needs of the students, staff, and faculty of the College.

The Chief Librarian will collaborate with members of the campus community, other CUNY colleges, the CUNY administration, and outside organizations to develop and advocate for appropriate policy and necessary resources. Striving for excellence through regular assessment of library functions, the Chief Librarian will work closely with the 50+ members of the library faculty and staff concerning academic issues, curriculum, and research. The Chief Librarian will work with the College’s Chief Information Officer and the Office of the Provost to assess, develop, and fully integrate the new and existing technical and educational resources of the library and the educational vision of the College. The Chief Librarian will work with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to identify donors, foundations, and granting agencies that can supplement state support. As the academic Chairperson of the Library Department, the Chief Librarian will also report to the Dean of Arts and Humanities in all matters pertaining to the support and development of librarians who are part of the teaching faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS

All titles require a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, a second graduate degree is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree; a record of substantive engagement in the library profession; a record of development and support for staff diversity; a record of advancing resource accessibility for a diverse community; experience implementing appropriate technologies reflecting developments in educational and information technologies and their impact on student learning and library effectiveness; a record of grant funding and collaborative development of major gifts; experience in complex public and/or unionized institutions; and supervision of tenured faculty.

8 or more years of progressively responsible library management including budgets and personnel, with 5 or more years in an academic or research library; and a record of scholarship, service, and professional achievement that will qualify the individual for a faculty appointment at the rank of tenured Professor.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
