CUNY CUNY Start Instructor - Reading/Writing in Queens, New York


Persons employed in the title of CUNY Start Instructor shall be assigned to teach and perform related functions as part of the CUNY Start program. The CUNY Start Instructors are full-time, non-tenure track positions.


Queensborough Community College is seeking to hire a CUNY Start Reading/Writing Instructor to work in the program’s CUNY Start program beginning Fall 2017. This position may require an afternoon and evening schedule. Please note that only existing CUNY Start Reading/Writing Instructors and/or those current CUNY employees who have successfully completed one semester as a Cooperating Reading/Writing Continuing Education Teacher in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply.

The CUNY Start Reading/Writing Instructor (“CUNY Start R/W Instructor”) is an instructor who possesses a clear understanding of CUNY Start’s Reading/Writing curriculum and the program’s pedagogical approaches for developing CUNY Start students’ academic and social readiness for college-level work. Reporting to the CUNY Start Director, the Instructor will perform the following duties:

Instruction by Core Instructors

  • Teach two CUNY Start R/W classes of approximately 25 students each, or 50 students per semester, using the CUNY Start R/W curriculum;

  • Teach CUNY Start curriculum in a well-managed classroom that engages students in a manner that is consistent with CUNY Start’s pedagogical approach(es);

  • Comment on student papers to encourage development and revision;

  • Provide individual and small group assistance to students outside of class, as appropriate; and

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Guidance to Writing Assistants by Core and Support Instructors

  • Refer and guide appropriate students to CUNY Start Writing Assistants for individual support during and outside of class;

  • Model and provide writing assistance, as needed;

  • Provide guidance on areas of need for individual students;

  • Coordinate Writing Assistant’s schedule to ensure appropriate services and supports are in place for students;

  • Advise Writing Assistant in his/her work responding to student writing;

  • Provide written and oral feedback about the Writing Assistant’s progress to R/W Curriculum and Professional Developers and Program Director; and

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Collaboration by Core and Support Instructors

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Advisor and/or Math Teacher to discuss program-related issues and to make collaborative decisions;

  • Work collaboratively with Core and Support Teachers.

  • Attend and participate in professional development meetings facilitated by CUNY Start R/W Curriculum and Professional Development team;

  • Prepare for, take part in, and help run orientation, student conferences, portfolio evaluation, and recruitment, as appropriate; and

  • Other related duties as assigned


Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and such other qualifications as may be necessary for the satisfactory performance of his/her instructional functions.


  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience working with diverse learners.

  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proactive and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and team member.

  • Computer proficiency using standard academic, administrative and office software programs/applications.
