CUNY Executive Director of Economic & Workforce Development in Queens, New York


York College/CUNY seeks an innovative, experienced, business development/attraction specialist to coordinate and advance its Economic and Workforce Development programs and initiatives.

Reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Finance/COO and working closely with the college's senior leadership, faculty, staff and local partners, this professional will provide vision, leadership and management for the college's economic and workforce development programs. The individual will be responsible for identifying, coordinating and advancing strategic public-private partnerships; for working with businesses, trade groups and community organizations to help stimulate local and regional economic activity; for developing fee-based professional training programs, worker training and retraining programs; for contract and grant-sponsored workforce training, literacy and pre-collegiate programs; and for fostering the development of small business companies, including start-up and spinoff companies.

Typical responsibilities will be to:

Lead the coordination of all planning and implementation of activities among the college's three workforce and economic development units: Adult and Continuing Education; The Adult Learning Center and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

Work with local and regional stakeholders including, but not limited to, units within NYS and NYC economic development agencies, CUNY, the college, other government entities, and business and industry

Analyze and synthesize budget, finance, social and organizational opportunities and constraints in developing start-up businesses; and deliver workforce, literacy and professional training programs

Identify opportunities to establish public-private partnerships between the college and industry

Conduct activities which foster entrepreneurship and support commercialization efforts. Informed by industry needs, leverage the academic and technological strengths of the college

Prepare and provide progress updates and briefings routinely to stakeholders, as well as the senior leadership of the college, CUNY and emerging and established business interests/partners, and

Perform other duties as assigned to advance the economic development, workforce programs and initiatives of the college.


This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years related experience. A Master's degree or doctorate is preferred in addition to Project Management certification. Related experience includes developing and advancing economic development initiatives and industry partnerships; demonstrated prior experience in business development, including developing partnerships between colleges and industry; and experience in the business investment community. A minimum of five years supervisory experience.

Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills; electronic communications; grant writing, business plan development experience. Must be computer literate.

Experience and expertise in navigating New York City, State and Federal statutory and regulatory requirements in areas including, but not limited to private use restrictions, finance, competitive bidding, contracts and procurement.
