CUNY Instructor or Assistant Professor - Math & Computer Science in Queens, New York
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Queensborough Community College is seeking applications to a position in the title of Instructor or Assistant Professor to start in Fall 2017.
As a community college in the City University of New York system, Queensborough Community College offers a wide variety of courses for university transfer, general education, preparation for careers, and enrichment. Contractual teaching load is 27 contact hours for the academic year; summer optional. Faculty on Assistant Professor tenure track lines receive reassigned time to pursue scholarship, and continued scholarly activities are required for tenure and promotion. For faculty in Instructor title, documented progress towards a completion of a Doctorate is required for continued appointment. Faculty members participate in departmental and college activities, including committee work, course and program assessment, curriculum development and preparation of grants. Faculty members also provide academic support and advisement for students.
Performs teaching and related faculty functions in both mathematics and statistics to a student population diverse in backgrounds and learning styles;
Promotes and develops the statistics program in conjunction with other faculty; offers opportunities to students for research in statistics;
Develops and employs instructional methods and strategies appropriate for courses including, but not limited to, student-centered learning, active learning, writing across the curriculum, online homework, learning communities, service learning, exploration with mathematical software packages and the use of internet-centered educational technology;
Displays productive scholarship or achievement in mathematics or statistics, and/or pedagogy research;
Leads and serves on departmental and college-wide committees, including administrative, supervisory and other functions;
Leads and participates in departmental and college responsibilities, including curriculum development and grants;
Leads and participates in the review and continuous assessment and improvement of the mathematics/statistics courses offered by the department;
Cooperates with others for the good of the institution;
Participates in faculty development opportunities including workshops and college programs;
Evening or weekend teaching may be required.
For Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. degree in statistics or applied mathematics or equivalent.
Master’s degree in statistics or applied mathematics and active progress toward a doctorate; or ABD in statistics or applied mathematics or equivalent. For Instructor position, doctorate must be completed within five (5) years.
A graduate degree in statistics preferred.
Prior teaching experience, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Experience with teaching in a diverse college setting, successful grant writing, and experience with educational technology preferred.
Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
