CUNY Lecturer - Music (Production/Technology) in Queens, New York

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Music at Queensborough Community College is seeking applications to a position in the title of Lecturer to start in Fall 2017.

The successful candidate will perform teaching and related faculty functions in area(s) as noted below.

As a community college in the City University of New York system, Queensborough Community College offers a wide variety of courses for university transfer, general education, preparation for careers, and enrichment. Contractual teaching load is 27 contact hours for the academic year; summer optional. Faculty members participate in departmental and college activities, including committee work, course and program assessment, curriculum development and preparation of grants. Faculty members also provide academic support and advisement for students.

The Department of Music offers two programs of study: the A.S. degree in Music, and the A.A.S. degree in Music Production. The Department’s facilities include two recording studios, a recording lab, three computer labs, classrooms equipped with electronic keyboards, a large rehearsal room, and several performance spaces (including access to an 875-seat theater). In addition to offering courses that support the two degree programs mentioned above, the department offers introductory music history courses, many of which feature writing-intensive instruction, and music industry courses. The department provides opportunities in performance, including concert band, chorus, and jazz, percussion, and small vocal ensembles.

Responsibilities include: Teach music recording technology, audio recording, music production, multimedia, and digital sound design courses. Additional teaching duties can include courses in musicianship; music theory; music history, literature and appreciation, and ensemble performance. Participate actively in department and college affairs, including student mentoring and advisement, curriculum and course development, grant writing, committee work, professional development, and other activities. Evening and/or weekend schedule may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Lecturer:

Bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Technology (or equivalent)

Prior teaching experience, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The preferred candidate will have experience scoring and creating soundtracks for film, TV, and other visual media; and will be proficient in Pro Tools and Max/MSP. Other highly preferred qualifications would include audio design for video games, and/or extensive experience with Ableton Live.

Experience teaching a range of courses at the college level in audio recording, music production, multimedia, digital sound design, musicianship, music theory and music history/literature/appreciation is highly preferred.

Other preferred qualifications:

Performance experience with electronics and/or electronic music ensembles and/or performance-level proficiency in a standard instrument is preferred.
