CUNY Student Athletics Trainer (Department of Intercollegiate Athletics: York College/CUNY) in Queens, New York

POSITION DETAILS

The York College/CUNY Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is seeking applications for a full-time Student Athletics Trainer. The Student Athletics Trainer will manage the day-to-day operations of the Athletic Training Room.

York College/CUNY is located in Jamaica, Queens, one of the five boroughs of New York City and is one of 11 senior colleges in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Athletically, York College is an NCAA Division III institution and a member of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). The York College Cardinals also have membership in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and supports 17 varsity sports.

The position has the following regular responsibilities: Practice and contest coverage, general training room services, travel to cover away contests (if needed), and strength and conditioning of student-athletes. The Student Athletics Trainer will also manage the purchasing of materials and supplies, and serve as the Head Certified Athletic Trainer for all 17 sports programs. In addition to the tasks outlined in the CUNY Title Overview (see below), the Student Athletics Trainer will also:

  • Provide on-site athletic training services for all sports (all seasons) at York College/CUNY

  • Oversee maintenance of the Athletic Training Room Facilities

  • Prescribe routine and corrective exercises to strengthen muscles

  • Perform soft tissue mobilization techniques to alleviate pain, restore function/motion and diminish edema

  • Render first aid to injured student-athletes

  • Maintain accurate documentation of athletic injuries and other medical conditions

  • Follow all HIPAA rules as instructed

  • Follow VCU policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience, as well as National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certification are required.

The following qualifications are highly preferred: Masters Degree; NSCA certification; NYS licensure or eligibility to be licensed; current certification in First Aid, CPR and AED; one year of experience in the field which can include graduate assistant or internship experience; valid driver license; and the ability to travel and perform evening and weekend work.

This position requires the selected candidate to have the physical ability to perform job-related duties, which may require lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, pulling, and pushing.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Develops, coordinates and administers a comprehensive training and sports medicine program for intercollegiate sports and provides related professional and administrative services.

  • Develops and maintains a program of preventive physical care for student-athletes; and coordinates physical examination screenings

  • Supervises treatment and referral of injuries and interfaces directly with medical personnel in the treatment of such athletes; coordinates rehabilitation programs; may administer related insurance program(s)

  • Determines and ensures the acquisition of safety equipment and supplies applicable to each intercollegiate sport

  • Supervises maintenance of statistical records of team injuries and medical data

  • Assists coaches in planning and instructing physical training programs for athletes.

  • Plans and schedules the purchasing of all sports medical program supplies and equipment within allocated budget parameters

  • Recruits, instructs, supervises and reviews the performance of training staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
