FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The mission of the Black Studies Unit at Hostos Community College is comprised of five interlocking objectives to teach the Black experience spanning the African continent and the African diaspora particularly in the Americas; to create an edifice of knowledge that generates mental, spiritual, and political emancipation from oppression; to cultivate conscious scholars dedicated to community service, activism, and the application of emancipatory knowledge to liberate the Black community; to expand campus and community relationships; and to sustain the position of Black Studies in the academy as a serious discipline essential to a quality education. As a discipline, Black Studies insists on African centeredness, African agency, and an African frame of reference in research methodology, pedagogy, and intellectual production.

The Black Studies Unit in the Humanities Department at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a strong record of Afrocentric thought and practice. The successful candidate will contribute to the Black Studies mission and perform the following:

  • Teaches various levels of Black Studies and interdisciplinary courses

  • Develops new courses and plan extracurricular activities

  • Engages in research and scholarly activities leading to professional growth

  • Mentors and cultivates students to prepare them for senior college, professional degrees, and their career paths

  • Participates in departmental and college assignments, and other tasks normally associated with the responsibilities of a full-time faculty appointment

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D degree in African American Studies. Candidates with a Ph.D in other disciplines who demonstrate a record of Afrocentric thought and practice will also be considered. ABD candidates who will defend their Ph.D dissertations by October 31, 2019 are also encouraged to apply. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Availability to work evening and weekend hours preferred.

COMPENSATION

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
