The Department of Health Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning Fall, 2022. Candidates must have an active record of research/scholarship/creative works, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Therapeutic Recreation and Recreation Education; engage in research/scholarship and professional organizations; advise students; and provide service to the department, college, university, and community.

The Program currently enrolls over 200 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Lehman is one of two Master’s degree programs in NYS. Our program attracts students from within and outside of NYS and provides a quality education in the Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation discipline and profession. The Lehman College campus is located in the Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is a four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. Research/scholarship are required for this tenure-track position. The teaching load is 18 credit hours over a 9-month appointment. Student advisement is required, (minimum of 3 hours per week during the academic year). Attendance at staff development opportunities, as well as participation in department and school-wide meetings, is expected. The qualified candidate must perform additional service to the College, University, and community. This role includes spearheading program specific-professional development initiatives for undergraduate students. Undergraduate scholar mentorship is encouraged. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship and professional development support.


Terminal Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Therapeutic Recreation/ Recreation/ Leisure studies or closely related academic field is required on commencement of the appointment; ABDs near completion of the degree will be considered.

One advanced degree or scholarship must be in Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation.

Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is required.

Evidence of an established or developing scholarly agenda

The ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.


Evidence of a successful record of college-level teaching experience in online, hybrid and/or in-person modalities

Practical experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation

Experience advising undergraduate students and supervising practicum work and fieldwork
