CUNY Assistant Professor - Modern Languages in Bronx, New York


The study of modern languages is designed to help students acquire elementary communication skills in French, Italian, or Spanish for daily social and professional purposes and career goals; to encourage students who wish to reinforce and develop their native language written and verbal comprehension skills; and to offer those students who already possess developed linguistic abilities the opportunity to pursue offerings in language and literature in French, Italian, and Spanish.

The Humanities Department's modern languages program at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College seeks applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor in French language and Francophone related area studies with strong interdisciplinary interest and practice.

In addition to the above, the selected candidates will perform the following:

  • Teach various levels of French and Francophone related areas studies courses; course and curriculum development; research and scholarly activities leading to professional growth.

  • Provide student guidance/advisement.

  • Develop undergraduate modern language offerings and programming.

  • Monitor student clubs of native French speakers.

  • Participate in departmental and college assignments, committee assignments, ad other tasks normally associated with the responsibilities of a full-time faculty appointment.


Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent conferred by June 30, 2019. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience teaching in both French and English

  • Ability to teach and develop curriculum as well as co-curricular activities for native and non-native speakers of French

  • Ability to teach effectively in an urban multicultural environment and develop curriculum in the area of French colonialism and/or Francophone societies, which could include the development of literary, cinematic, artistic, ethnographic, and historical trends

  • The area-studies developed should complement one of the other related disciplines in the Humanities Department: Black Studies, Latin and Caribbean Studies, Humanities, Philosophy, Visual and Performing Arts or an additional Modern Foreign Language

  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours


Salary for this position commensurate with education and experience.
