CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Nursing Unit within the Department of Allied Health provides educational opportunities leading to socioeconomic mobility for students from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, particularly Hispanics, and African Americans. The Nursing programs provide educational opportunities for students seeking entry or mobility within a nursing career path as a licensed practical nurse and/or licensed professional nurse (RN-A.A.S.). The nursing programs serve as a resource for the promotion of health and wellness for the population of the South Bronx and surrounding communities. These programs adhere to the standards of Practice and Code of Ethics as set forth by Professional Nursing Organizations.
The Laboratory Technician in the Nursing Department is involved with activities dealing directly with the function of the Nursing Laboratories. The technician will function in a supportive role to the faculty, with clear administrative lines to the Department Chairperson and the semester coordinators. Because of the nature of the duties, the Laboratories Technician’s education and experience should be in nursing with special emphasis on the basic nursing skills.
The Nursing Department seeks applications for a College Laboratory Technician, reporting directly to the Coordinator of the Nursing Unit. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Secures, maintains, and prepares equipment in nursing laboratories for the use of both the faculty and the students.
Assists faculty with equipment during instructional labs as needed.
Assists department/faculty with proposals for upgrading of the nursing labs regarding equipment and with outreach to companies toobtain free literature and/or equipment for use in nursing labs.
Orders, receives and stores supplies including hospital bed linens. Maintains records of purchase orders.
Maintains inventory of non-disposable equipment on computer.
Schedules time for students to use practice lab and supervises the safe use of equipment.
Supervises students as they practice skills taught by their Professors.
Maintains records of student utilization of practice labs. and communicates with appropriate clinical instructors regarding dexterity status of referred students.
Replaces and maintains equipment used by students and faculty, i.e.: catheterization trays, tracheostomy suctioning sets, tracheostomy cleaning sets, irrigation sets, IV tubing and bags, TPN dressing kits etc.
Assists with simulation related to set up preparation of all mannequins, set up room for simulation.
Prepares realistic nursing situations for instructional labs, e.g., draining wounds, ulcerated decubiti, gastric drainage, incontinence.
Duplicates and provides “patient” charts and flow sheets from affiliated hospitals to be used by Professors during instructional labs.
Prepares schedule of lab room assignments for four semesters of nursing.
Prepares labs for presentation to all groups wishing to visit the nursing labs and ensures all safety measures are adhered to.
Schedules cleaning of labs on a regular basis and maintenance of rooms as needed.
Essential duties require in-person presence.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are preferred:
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State
Experience working in a higher education setting
Associates Degree or Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field
Availability to work evening and weekend hours
COMPENSATION
$50,655 - $60,829; commensurte with educaion and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Employees hired on or after October 1, 2022, and their eligible dependents will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, employees will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day. Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Enrollment.
An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
