Located in the storied and resilient borough of The Bronx, Lehman College reflects the rich diversity that characterizes CUNY and the City of New York. The College serves more than 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students across 140-degree programs, plus 13,000 students in certificate and workforce development programs. Over fifty percent of Lehman undergrads have household incomes of less than $30,000; 80 percent are students of color; and 45 percent speak a language other than English at home. Nearly seventy percent are female and the median age is 25. The National Bureau of Economic Research and the Equality of Opportunity Project recently ranked Lehman as third in the nation for its role in moving large numbers of low-income students into the middle class and beyond in a borough it previously called “among the worst counties in the U.S. in helping poor children up the income ladder.” Among Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), the American Council on Education (ACE) has ranked Lehman as No. 1 in the nation for upward mobility. We are also one of only four public colleges in the nation that belong in the top 25 of “low-debt/high-income schools.” Lehman has set its sights on becoming the top contributor to educational attainment in the Bronx. We seek to double, from 45,000 to 90,000 the number of high-quality degrees and credentials that Lehman students earn between 2015 and 2030. To do so, we are relying on data analytics to inform student advising, strategically addressing bottlenecks, implementing course redesign using technology, implementing experiential learning projects, frictionless transfer pathways, and public-private partnerships, and leveraging operational efficiencies to expand access to services that promote mental health and wellness, and emergency grants and services to help deal with housing and food insecurity, both of which are growing challenges at Lehman and other campuses across the state and country.
The School of Education is comprised of three departments: Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and
Special Education; Early Childhood and Childhood Education; and Middle and High School Education offering teacher certification programs for undergraduates and masters and certificate programs for graduate students. The Graduate Center of CUNY offers a doctoral program in Urban Education and Lehman Education Faculty hold appointments in that program as well as at Lehman. The School of Education hosts two institutes and one center that are essential to the community outreach of Lehman College: The Literacy Institute, The Bronx Institute and The Center for School/College Collaboratives. It also supports several alternative teacher education programs: NYC Men Teach, Teacher Opportunity Corps and NYC Teaching Fellows.
The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success and serves as a President’s Advisory Board and a member of the Provost's and Deans' Council, through which the Dean participates in the formulation, evaluation, and administration of College policy and the advancement of the College's strategic priorities. The Dean has overall responsibility for operational management and programs in the School of Education. The Dean oversees faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure; development and evaluation; academic budget management and resource allocation; program and curriculum development and assessment; strategic academic planning; and compliance with accreditation standards. The Dean provides leadership to the faculty and staff in maintaining an excellent program of instruction consistent with the mission of Lehman and of the City University of New York.
The Dean will demonstrate strong advocacy on behalf of the entire unit, inclusive of students, staff and faculty. The Dean should have a strong understanding of the unique strengths and challenges of working in the Bronx, and in particular should be well-versed in the rich racial, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of the borough. The Dean should recognize that a “one-size-fits-all” approach to educational improvement is least effective in this context.
• Provides visionary and strategic leadership for the School of Education; demonstrates a deep understanding of the socioeconomic, linguistic, racial and ethnic communities of the immediate Lehman community and the surrounding Bronx community.
• Demonstrates a strategic understanding of local and national challenges associated with urban public institutions; ability to navigate the political and financial realities that are characteristic of New York City and State.
• Pursues and actively promotes mutually beneficial collaborations with stakeholders and constituents, including schools and other educational agencies, local and state governments, and the general public; advocates for Bronx initiative programs serving the needs of the immediate community.
• Employs a strategic planning approach that fosters and utilizes the skills, knowledge and abilities of the faculty and staff of the School of Education and engages the faculty in visionary thinking and strategic planning for the future.
• Oversees the compliance and renewal of national accreditation for the certified programs offered in the College, including the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
• Stimulates and supports high quality teaching, faculty research, and professional activities.
• Leads the continuous process of assessment, program and curricular review, renewal and new program development.
• Provides effective management of financial resources.
• Provides leadership in the development of inter-professional education and practice.
• Leads fundraising efforts for the School of Education; provides leadership that increases resource streams and encourages research grants, and public/private partnerships; and provides mentorship and guidance to School of Education faculty and staff with grant writing.
• Leads retention and graduation initiatives.
• Collaborates with faculty, staff, and administration in the development of short- and long-term strategic and tactical plans for the School of Education.
• Advances excellence in teaching by supporting, encouraging and managing faculty development and evaluation; advances professional development of staff by encouraging and managing staff development and evaluation; Provides staff with professional development opportunities.
• Collaborates closely with the vice provost for academic programs and educational effectiveness, the vice president of enrollment management and associate provost, the vice president of student affairs and other school deans to advance college strategic initiatives and student success.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College:
An earned Doctorate in one of the disciplines or interdisciplinary areas of study within the School; record of academic achievement in the discipline meriting appointment as a tenured full Professor; University teaching experience complemented by a superior research and scholarly record; proven leadership and administrative experience related to the work of the School; extensive knowledge and experience in a theory/practice area related to urban education; demonstrated knowledge and engagement in research on effective teacher education (including clinical residencies); demonstrated success in obtaining federal, state or private grants; experience in fiscal affairs; demonstrated experience with the process of preparing for CAEP accreditation; knowledge of and experience in urban education and navigating local, state and national education policies and procedures with a focus on social justice and equity; successful record of building university/school/community partnerships; ability
to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the broader educational community; and demonstrated effectiveness working in a multi-cultural environment.
