CUNY Faculty Open Rank - Philosophy in Bronx, New York

The Lehman College campus is located in the Bronx, New York, and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. It has a diverse student body of more than 14,000 students, and is recognized for its small classes and close interaction between students and faculty. In 2017, Lehman College was ranked as having the 4th highest mobility rate in the nation by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Equality of Opportunity Project. Starting in 2020, the teaching load at Lehman College is 18 hours (6 courses) per year. Although the college is focused on teaching, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship, and creative works. Service to the college and the community is part of its mission, as is a clear commitment to student engagement. For junior faculty, teaching is reduced by eight courses over the first five years in order to assist with scholarship. Faculty are also eligible to apply for competitive internal Lehman College and CUNY grants to support their scholarship.

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for the position of tenure-track or tenured Assistant, Associate, or (full) Professor, beginning August 2019. Candidates must have an active record of scholarship and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level. Although the area of specialization is open, the successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in at least one of the following: Ancient Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Non-Western Philosophy, or Feminist Philosophy. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise students and to engage in service to the department and the college. Such service may include philosophy program coordination, department committee work, and thesis supervision, as well as other assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-stream academic appointment. Evening teaching may also be required.

The successful candidate will join a philosophy department that is growing and vibrant. The number of majors and minors has been increasing. Our course offerings include courses in Western and non-Western philosophy, ethics, social and political philosophy, history of philosophy, logic, language and mind, and applied philosophy, and often emphasize interdisciplinary connections. We seek candidates with a strong scholarly background who will broaden our offerings and help grow the major.

For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor: Ph.D. in Philosophy is required on commencement of the appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

In addition, active involvement in professional organizations and commitment to student success are desired.
