I.T. Senior Associates perform highly complex professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Senior Associates perform a range of work in development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include diagnosing, evaluating, overseeing and resolving highly complex projects. They have wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may serve in lead roles on complex programs or projects, and/or serve as a direct supervisor of a unit or group.

I.T. Senior Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines, decision-making ability in situations related to those disciplines, and be able to serve as a resource in these areas. They may contribute to decisions on I.T. policies and technical standards.

IT Senior Associate




The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a senior college within the City University of New York (CUNY) system, granting both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The Information Technology Division of Lehman College is recognized as an innovation leader and is responsible for technology delivery, leadership and innovation to achieve Lehman's strategic vision.

Reporting to the Director of IT Application Services, the IT Senior Associate Level 3 will serve as a senior application developer, architect and database administrator. S/he will be responsible for the architecture, development and maintenance of the enterprise data warehouse as well as the development of responsive, accessible and optimized data-driven applications utilizing current tools, technologies and methods, reflecting best practices for web & mobile responsive applications. This position is also responsible for setting standards and guidelines across the organization. The Senior Application Architect/Database Administrator works closely with colleagues across IT as well as college-wide constituents to enhance, develop and maintain applications and data sources that support the college’s student success and institutional effectiveness mission.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manages complex application development tasks and technical architecture designs in the area of applications, systems programming and database administration.

  • Provides expert advice and take a leadership role in projects involving the implementation of new enterprise applications and data automation.

  • Creates, maintains and troubleshoots complex databases, applications, application programming interfaces and related web services for development, testing, production and business intelligence. Plans and implements backup and recovery as well as ongoing database tuning, data integrity and load automation for all Oracle databases.

  • Implements and enforces best practice security and access for all Oracle databases. Works closely with the Network and Security team to upgrade and apply patches to all Oracle database servers.

  • Works closely with the director to establish and/or improve data warehouse, application development best practices, including but not limited to (1) establishing and following methodologies for building reusable code and libraries for recurring use and ensure such resources are well documented; (2) implementing business rules as discrete components ensuring the correct enactment of policies governing the accuracy of related data and the execution of the actions to be performed; and (3) designing applications for future usage and added functionality to support new business requirements and extend functional scalability.

  • Provides and promotes recommendations on both front-end and back-end optimization and performance techniques to improve efficiency; and leads efforts to implement such recommendations.

  • Transforms functional requirements into technical requirements and recommends industry best practice solutions.

  • Analyzes user requirements, procedures and problems to automate processing or to improve existing systems, including the evaluation user requests for new or modified program to determine feasibility, cost and time required, compatibility with current systems and computing capabilities.

  • In collaboration with other team members and under the leadership of the director, leads and oversees the development of highly enterprise level data- driven applications and systems architecture and implementation; works with the development team to plan and coordinate program migrations, database changes, reference data and changes through the development life cycle and operations improvements.

  • Develops front-end responsive and ADA compliant web-based software modules using technologies such as Bootstrap, Cascading Styling Sheet (CSS), Java Server Pages (JSPs), JavaScript, HTML5 (Hyper Text Markup Language), XML (Extensible Markup, PHP, Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and others.


  1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  2. An equivalent of ten years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: ten years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus eight years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus six years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position

  3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. In addition to the minimum qualifications above, To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Higher Education

  • Experience with higher education systems such as CUNYfirst, Blackboard, DegreeWorks, Facts, student success platforms, among others

  • Hands-on DBA experience in managing large enterprise databases

  • Experience delivering at least one major system from scratch where candidate was responsible for designing the architecture

  • In addition to the technologies mentioned under the “Duties and Responsibilities” section, knowledge of Service Oriented Architectures, API design and implementation, Object Oriented Programming, web services, Java, PHP, JQuery, JSON, Sencha Ext JS, Oracle DBMS, MS SQL Server or related technologies

  • Demonstrable project management knowledge and experience

  • Experience with alert, case management, and/or other student related systems

  • Excellent people skills -- able to work collaboratively with colleagues and management across the institution and within CUNY; able to mentor and inspire others to excel

  • Proven ability to translate functional requirements, mockups and wireframes into deliverable front-end interface

  • Skilled at cross-browser and cross-device compatibility issues and solutions

  • Proficiency in implementing Section 508 and ADA compliancy standards, as well as related accessibility considerations

  • Strong communication skills to translate needs of clients to executable designs
