POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the President of Lehman College, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) must bring visionary fundraising leadership marked by a solid track record of increasing philanthropic support, the purposeful expansion and diversification of philanthropic revenue, extensive campaign and leadership experience, and success in soliciting and achieving significant gifts. The VPIA will inspire the staff through effective motivation, mentoring, and team building; possess the leadership acumen to leverage existing capacity and strengthen performance; and effectively manage and build the comprehensive operation, while maintaining best practices, collegiality and shared accountability with clearly defined goals.

In addition, this position will:

• Work closely with the President, the Lehman College Foundation Board, Vice Presidents, Deans, faculty, staff and alumni to develop compelling funding requests to secure financial support for the annual fund as well as the college’s mission, program initiatives, strategic priorities, scholarships, endowed professorships, and other endowments.

• Work collaboratively across the institution to develop a refined Table of Needs for fundraising planning and also develop a pipeline and vision for philanthropy.

• Provide leadership to strengthen relations and increase donor support by identifying, cultivating and soliciting existing and new major donors for capital, annual and endowment gifts; cultivate alumni and friends of the college to become donors.

• Establish and implement strategic alliances and partnerships with businesses, corporations, foundations and social agencies that advance the college, with particular attention to economic development activities.

• Develop a portfolio of prospects and manage an aggressive calendar of outreach that effectively involves faculty, staff, alumni, board members, and volunteers in the solicitation process to secure funds from the comprehensive database of prospects.

• Create an external constituency beyond alumni to ensure a diverse and robust pipeline of prospects for sustainability in fundraising to support initiatives at an institutional level.

• Lead the development and implementation of a strategy for metrics and measurement of fundraising.

• Identify and help recruit directors to serve on the Lehman College Foundation Board.

• Contribute to the development of the College and to the educational and economic advancement of the residents of the Bronx community.

• Serve as the chief liaison to CUNY Central office on all development/fundraising strategies and efforts, and serve as chief spokesperson in the area of development.

• Oversee and direct a strategic development communication strategy for all development communications and a social media strategy for fundraising in collaboration with Media Relations and Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Additional Qualifications:

• Proven record of success in securing major gifts from corporations, individuals and foundations, and/or implementing a range of fundraising activities, including special events, proposal submissions, and individual solicitations.

• Ability to build a strong and highly functioning network of supporters among the college’s external business and community leaders, government and non-governmental organization officials, trendsetters in academia, as well as prominent local and national figures.

• Established track record in managing institutional development, including major gift solicitation, planned giving, events planning and targeted drives for corporate and foundation donations and sponsorships.

• High level of comfort and sensitivity in diverse settings and ability to communicate with and harness energies from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including: board members, public officials, business executives, faculty, staff, students and alumni representing varied ethnic, cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

• Broad understanding of and commitment to success in college advancement within the context of urban public higher education and an extensive record of achievement as a fundraiser.

• Excellent writer with a track record of writing grant-winning proposals and compelling cases for support and solicitation materials.

• Understanding of development-specific technology to assess and improve systems and processes to further advancement goals.

• Interpersonal communication skills to strengthen and lead alumni and advancement programs to new levels of success at Lehman

• Ability to take initiative and effectively navigate the role in a bureaucratic, rules-bound organization and internal culture.

• Entrepreneurial, innovative, creative and leadership approach to fundraising, while demonstrating agility, transparency and political astuteness in the complex CUNY system.

• Possess tenacity, fortitude, courage, sense of humor and a results-oriented approach to leading the advancement program, supervising and motivating staff and facilitating the involvement of volunteers.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary range: $220,000 - $240,000.

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
