NYC College of Technology

Full/Part Time

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college offering 60 associate and bachelor’s degree programs in downtown Brooklyn. The African American Studies Department at City Tech invites applications for a full-time tenure track Associate or Assistant Professor position in the African American Studies Department to begin Spring 2023 or Fall 2023.

The African American Studies Department strives to bring into disciplinary focus, through inter-departmental and multicultural course offerings in Liberal Arts and Sciences, the history and culture of Africans and their descendants, throughout the diaspora from antiquity to the present. African American Studies offers a robust annual schedule of programs for the college.

The position requires a record of and commitment to teaching, scholarly research resulting in publications and presentations, service to the Department and College, and academic advisement. The Assistant or Associate Professor will be expected to teach classes and participate actively in College/University-wide initiatives and lead departmental level efforts, playing an active role in the creation, development, and assessment of Department curricula, including interdisciplinary courses and additional minors. The Assistant or Associate Professor will collaborate with the department and others in the college community to facilitate events throughout the academic year.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in African American Studies or other related fields at time of appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor should have a record of sustained scholarship and provide evidence of academic professional contributions that qualify them for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

Preferred Qualifications

The department seeks a candidate with interdisciplinary expertise that will allow them to teach a range of courses, both lower and upper level, in theater, literature (African, African American, and Afro-Caribbean), history, and/or the sociological aspects of the Black community. While the department is most interested in an individual with expertise in literature, culture, and history of the African Diaspora, preference will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary approaches to instruction and research, as they must be able to create interdisciplinary courses and contribute new course offerings that could lead to additional minors. The preferred candidate will have some college level teaching experience and an active research agenda that includes publications and presentations. Demonstrated leadership qualities, including an exemplary and sustained record of academic leadership through curriculum development or departmental events planning, and/or other educational initiatives, are a plus.

Vaccine Requirement

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
