CUNY Assistant Professor - Linguistics (English) in Brooklyn, New York


Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of English with a starting date in August 2019.

The Linguistics Program, housed in Brooklyn College’s English department and which also draws its faculty from several other language-related departments, offers undergraduate students training in understanding and analyzing language structure and covers the full scope of the field of linguistics through an interdisciplinary approach.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Teach courses in language structure (e.g., morphology, phonology, semantics, and syntax) and in sociolinguistics as well as courses in the “language” areas of our English M.A. program.

  • Conduct research and mentor students in areas of linguistics that are relevant.

  • Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field from an accredited institution

  • Ability to teach undergraduate courses in language structure (phonology, morphology, syntax, and/or semantics) is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching courses in at least some of the following areas: sociolinguistics, language contact, dialect variation, the structure of African-American English and/or other varieties of English, languages of the Caribbean, language acquisition and language processing. However, other areas of specialization will be considered.


Salary commensurate with experience and credentials. All appointments are subject to financial availability.
