CUNY Assistant Professor - Restorative Dentistry (2 Positions) in Brooklyn, New York

FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY), is a comprehensive college offering associate and baccalaureate degrees for over 17,000 students in downtown Brooklyn.

We invite applications for two full-time tenure-track positions in the Restorative Dentistry Department at the Assistant Professor level, to begin during the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Restorative Dentistry department has a full time faculty of six, with twelve part-time faculty members, one full time College Laboratory Technician (CLT), three adjunct CLTs, and one administrative assistant. The degree program offered by the Restorative Dentistry department and accredited by the Commission On Dental Accreditation (CODA) leads to the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Dental Laboratory Technology. The program prepares students for the evolving needs of the dental and dental technology industries by offering a two-year full time program with a comprehensive curriculum encompassing all phases of dental technology. The department is considering the development of a baccalaureate program.

The program seeks candidates who possess current skills in the latest techniques and technologies used in the dental laboratory field and who meet CODA and University standards for instructional staff. Candidates with a well-rounded education and experience in all phases of dental prosthesis fabrication, especially in the areas of dental Implants, CAD/CAM technologies, complete dentures, removable partial dentures and orthodontics, are highly desirable.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong working knowledge of various elements of dental laboratory technology including but not limited to health and safety requirements, various processing techniques, working of laboratory equipment, understanding of materials used in the program, and technical proficiency in dental CAD/CAM technologies. Weekend and evening hours may be required. In addition to classroom time, the position entails office hours for student advisement and administrative duties within the department and throughout the college and university. Professional development and scholarly activities are required.

Duties include:

  • Teaching laboratory or lecture courses in Dental Laboratory Technology

  • Preparing course material for efficient lecture and laboratory sessions

  • Evaluating and offering feedback on student projects

  • Preparing students to become the critical thinkers, problem solvers, and lifelong learners before entering the dental laboratory workforce

  • Academic advisement, guidance, committee and departmental assignments, and professional development activities

  • Performing dental laboratory related research and sharing expertise with dental community by publishing and presenting

  • Service to the College through participation in the activities, projects and committee assignments within the college and community groups, School of Professional Studies, and Restorative Dentistry department

  • Service to the professional community through participation in the activities, projects and committees for dental and dental laboratory technology local, regional and national organizations

  • Participation in ongoing student and faculty recruitment activities such as high school visits, conducting open houses and attending professional activities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with industry professionals and attend trade shows.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or higher in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

  • Certification as a Dental Technician (CDT) by the National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology as mandated by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

  • At least 5 years of full-time professional practice in a position of responsibility in a dental laboratory

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • Excellent communication and demonstration skills

  • Leadership potential and skills needed to play an important role in a growing dental laboratory technology program.
