FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Humanities Department at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), of the City University of New York, a comprehensive college offering 60 associate and bachelor’s degrees, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Spanish Language and Literature, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2022. City Tech is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution located in downtown Brooklyn. Students and faculty are from more than 120 countries and speak more than 85 languages, with many students the first in their families to attend college.
The World Language Program is in the Humanities Department, a multi-disciplinary department that also offers courses in art history, communication, Latin American studies, music and theatre. The position requires a commitment to teaching, scholarly research resulting in publications and presentations, sustained service to the department and college, and regular involvement, as assigned, in academic advisement. The successful candidate will be expected to participate actively and collaboratively in department, college and university-wide initiatives; assist in world language placement efforts and advisement of students; and play an active role in the creation and assessment of curricula that will support the World Language Program and the Academic Minors in Spanish Language, Hispanic Language and Culture, and Art History and Visual Culture. We seek a candidate who will develop professionally focused language courses, including those aimed at heritage speakers of Spanish and ones that support the curricular interests of a Hispanic-Serving Institution in general.
Ph.D. degree in Spanish, in either literature or linguistics. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
The preferred candidate would have formal training in language instruction, 2 or more years of college-level relevant teaching experience, and a demonstrated interest both in working with heritage speakers and in developing courses with a professional focus. Candidates with additional expertise in art history, fashion and/or design as it impacts the Hispanic world are ideal, and experience with bilingual programs is desirable. Research and publication are required for tenure and promotion. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in hand by the date of appointment.
