The English Department at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), of the City University of New York, a comprehensive college offering 60 associate and bachelor’s degrees, invites applications for two (2) full-time tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2022. For the last five years City Tech has been named as a leader in the diversity of its students among all Comprehensive/ Bachelor’s Colleges (North), in the annual survey by U.S. News and World Report. Students and faculty are from more than 120 countries and speak more than 85 languages, with many students the first in their families to attend college. City Tech is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian America/Native American Pacific Island Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Located in Downtown Brooklyn, the College is convenient to Manhattan and mass transit.

The English department at City Tech is dedicated to advancing student success and encourages its faculty to become involved in innovative educational approaches, including student-centered pedagogy, innovative curriculum design, learning communities, and multimodal pedagogy to enhance student achievement and retention. Faculty members work collaboratively with other departments to sponsor an annual Literary Arts Festival, roundtable discussions, and other enrichment activities

The successful candidates will join an English Department that offers a Bachelor of Science in Professional and Technical Writing, an interdisciplinary Academic Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies, and a wide range of courses in composition, literature, ESOL, and creative writing. The English Department has recently launched a department-supervised writing center, and continues to build its First-Year Writing program and Professional and Technical Writing degree. We seek candidates who will contribute to one or more of these areas.

Tenure-track professorial positions carry an 18-hour course load per academic year. Faculty will be expected to teach writing courses, make service contributions at the departmental, college, and university levels, and pursue an active research agenda. New faculty receive 24 hours of course release to pursue their research agendas that is to be used during their first five years of employment. Faculty who take on administrative roles such as directing the writing center, the first-year writing program, or other assignments receive re-assigned time to carry out these responsibilities.


A writing studies, rhetoric and composition, or a closely related field is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

The preferred candidates will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • writing center administration

  • writing program administration

  • professional and technical communication

  • multilingual pedagogy

  • multimodal pedagogy and research

Candidates with experience teaching students of diverse racial, ethnic, educational, and linguistic backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as are those with online synchronous and asynchronous teaching experience. We are particularly interested in candidates with knowledge of contemporary composition pedagogy as it applies to writing program administration, best practices in the teaching of professional and technical writing, and the implementation of student-centered pedagogy.
