Brooklyn College invites applications for the Communications and College Relations Manager position in the Office of Communications and Marketing.

As one of the senior colleges in CUNY, Brooklyn College has a student enrollment of more than 17,000 and offers 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the creative arts, humanities, social, behavioral and natural sciences, mathematics, education and business. The Office of Communications & Marketing promotes a positive and consistent image for the College for internal and external audiences and champions the accomplishments of its students, faculty and staff.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Communications & Marketing with direction from the Director of News & Information, the Communications & Public Relations Manager serves as a lead public relations representative for the College, managing and strengthening relationships with internal and external press and contributing to marketing and communications projects and initiatives.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain ongoing media relations with local, city, national and education press. Create, maintain and represent the College to a comprehensive contact database for local and national education and general process, as well as scholarly journals, web sites, bloggers and influencers

  • Respond effectively to media inquiries from a variety of stakeholders. Develop compelling statements and responses.

  • Draft press releases, op-eds, media pitches, talking points and official College statements that publicize and promote the College, its faculty and students. Pitch stories to the press that build awareness of academic excellence, and promote a comprehensive directory of faculty experts

  • Work closely with senior College administrators on crisis management and related communications. Advise and counsel on press and media issues

  • Attend on- and off-campus College events, and plan and stage media elements. Coordinate interviews with members of the College community. Prepare students, faculty and staff for the interview.

  • Manage the development and distribution of newsletters that promote College successes, upcoming events and other relevant content. Work closely with department staff to elevate key stories on the College web site and across other marketing platforms

  • Coordinate event planning, and facilitate the use of College as a location for film, television, commercial production and CUNY-wide functions

  • Collaborate with members of the faculty and administration to develop story ideas for use in internal and external publications

  • Work closely with staff inside and outside of the department on College-wide projects and initiatives


Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six years of experience or more in a similar position, either in-house or agency is preferred

  • Experience in marketing and/or communications in for-profit, non-profit or academia is preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Adobe Suite programs and project management tools (Trello / Basecamp) is preferred

  • Experience working with members of the press in a variety of capacities and in a variety of media outlets

  • Experience in coordinating multiple projects and working across all levels of staff

  • Strong writing and communications skills

  • Ability to work some weekends or evenings


Establishes and maintains communication and ongoing working relationships with outside organizations and manages the design, implementation, and management of communications to support College visibility and recognition.

  • Represents the College to a portfolio of external organizations

  • Plans and implements communications campaigns, working with publications staff

  • Applies an understanding of the concerns of external organizations to develop short- and long-range plans to advance the College's position and support community/public identified needs

  • Plans and implements major activities such as conferences, collaborative partnerships, and educational programs to support identified needs and issues

  • Identifies and develops new audiences and communities to further the mission of the College

  • Develops and implements advertising and communications campaigns, working with publications and editorial personnel

  • Maintain relationships with media representatives

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
