POSITION DETAILS

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-five campuses within the dynamic City University of New York (CUNY) System. Named for the slain civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. The College mission is infused with a strong commitment to social justice.

The Dean oversees functions of the School to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. The successful candidate will develop long- and short-range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. The Dean will foster a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside the College.

The Dean reports to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the Provosts Council. The Dean provides academic and administrative leadership for the undergraduate programs, academic departments, curriculum and faculty within the School and participates in the development of college-wide policies.The appointee is responsible for the development of the School’s strategic and operational plans, and budget.

Responsibilities of the Dean include:

  • Providing visionary and strategic leadership

  • Supporting high quality teaching, faculty research and professional activities

  • Fostering academic planning and innovative curricular and scholarly development

  • Sucessful track record of obtaning external funding

  • Encouraging grant / contract writing and submission for research and contract funding

  • Ensuring effective management of financial resources including budget planning and management

  • Supporting faculty recruitment, review, and development

  • Enhancing engagement with business/industry, alumni, and the community

  • Encouraging innovations in using technology

  • Supporting the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Fostering academic and non-academic activities to increase the school’s visibility within CUNY and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

The successful candidate must possess an earned Ph.D. degree from a regionally accredited institution in a discipline represented in the school, at least five years of academic leadership at the level of Department Chair or above and a successful track record in teaching, scholarship/research, service, and obtaining external funding.

Preferred characteristics: vision, creativity and strong leadership skills with capability of both nurturing and of making tough decisions. Experience with discipline-specific accreditation, capacity to cultivate excellence in teaching, and funded research; encourage innovative program growth, proven ability to manage fiscal and physical resources, a track record of working with a diverse group of faculty, students, and administrators, as well as with school partners. The success candidate will possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, and a personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salary Range: $155,000 - $165,000
