Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a Distinguished Lecturer in Directing position at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema to begin in January 2019.

The Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema is a public film school located on the lot at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn, NY. The School offers a specialized education in eight disciplines leading to an M.F.A: Producing, Directing, Screenwriting, Cinematography, Post-Production, Media Scoring, Sonic Arts and Digital Animation & Visual FX and a 2 year M.A. in Screen Studies. Housed in a new 70,000 sq. ft. state-of the-art facility, the school is the first public graduate film school in New York. Feirstein is a mission driven program, with the goal of cultivating new and emerging voices in cinema through an abiding commitment to diversity and Inclusion.

Distinguished Lecturers are experienced practitioners or teachers who hold a full-time, non-tenure- track position with a maximum appointment period of seven years, subject to annual reappointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach five courses in directing per year

  • Be available for student advisement and mentorship

  • Contribute to the ongoing curricular development of the new M.F.A program in Cinema Arts

  • Aid in the admissions process by reading applications and performing interviews.

  • Serve on department committees, as assigned by the department chair, such as the equipment committee, curriculum committee, or personal projects committee.

Bachelor's degree and a significant record of achievement in narrative filmmaking in a profession or field of expertise related to teaching assignments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An M.F.A. in film/digital production is preferred

  • At least 3 years of college-level teaching experience.

  • A recognized body of credited, professional work in narrative directing

  • A demonstrable capacity to translate one's professional background into a dynamic classroom experience.

  • Hands-on expertise in digital production, including familiarity with some of the following equipment: Red Epic, Canon C-line (100, 200, etc.), Sony FS-7 and A7SII; exposure to Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere is a plus.

  • A commitment to teaching at a public, urban institution that serves a highly diverse student body is essential.


$115,816-118,132 Salary commensurate with experience and credentials. All appointments are subject to financial availability.
