POSITION DETAILS

The State University of New York, Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center, provides tuition free academic and workforce development training to eligible New York State residents, providing a pathway to lifelong learning, college access and economic self-sufficiency. Brooklyn EOC is administered by New York City College of Technology, CUNY.

Under supervision of the Student Services Director and located in the Advisement Center, the Senior Academic Advisor for the College Connections Initiative advises students in the College Preparation program and assists students in career and academic programs to connect to a pathway to college.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties inlude but are not limited to the following:

• Provide academic and career advisement to students enrolled in the College Preparation program.

• Advise students enrolled in academic and career programs on preparing and planning for college.

• Provide workshops and seminars on the college application process.

• Plan college fairs and college tours.

• Review program requirements and EOC policies and procedures with applicants and students in individual or group settings.

• Assist students with developing life skills, setting goals, discussing educational and career options.

• Collaborate with instructors, advisors, and other staff in developing student success strategies.

• Establish and maintain student files, databases and records.

• Track student application and placement into college.

• Prepare activity reports and analyses.

• Assist in EOC outreach and provide College Connections information to community groups.

• Provide follow-up services for students.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in related field.

• Prior professional experience working directly with non-traditional students, including those with academic deficits, is highly desired.

• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

• Customer service orientation is essential, and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and external constituents.

• Proficiency in MS Office strongly preferred; experience with academic or career advising software a plus.

VACCINE MANDATE

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling to a diverse student population within an Educational Opportunity Center (EOC).

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students

  • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements

  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits

  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines

  • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling

  • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed

  • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling

  • May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

SALARY RANGE: $51,242 - $63,382
