Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for advising and providing financial aid services to our students. The successful candidate will coordinate various financial aid programs and processes and will research problems and recommend solutions.

The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide on-going comprehensive guidance (including “Special Circumstances") on the financial aid process and eligibility requirements (including the application process, verification process, awarding, the cost of attendance, and available resources) to students.

  • Collect, review, verify, and correct, financial aid information and research and resolve related problems.

  • Administer financial aid programs and participate in the development and implementation of financial aid services, policies, and procedures.

  • Analyze reports and financial aid activities.

  • Develop brochures and update financial aid information (including the College’s Catalog, Website, and other materials).

  • Represent the Financial Aid Office at the College and University wide meetings.

  • Participate in financial aid workshops, orientation, and other related activities

  • Keep abreast of financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Available for evening and weekend coverage as required

  • Participate in staff training and development

  • Assist with special projects as needed.



Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.


  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, New York State, and New York City financial aid programs and regulations with a minimum of 4 years full-time experience working directly in a financial aid office.

  • Excellent communications (written and oral), interpersonal, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to exercise professional judgment in applying problem-solving and organizational skills.

  • Strong data analytic skills and conflict resolution skills.

  • Ability to manage and reconcile conflicting priorities.

  • Working experience and understanding of PeopleSoft.

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.


Administers and supervises financial aid programs and operations.

  • Reviews contracts, disbursements, tuition and fees; validates student eligibility for various programs

  • Administers, monitors and troubleshoots CUNY financial aid systems as well as Federal and NY State systems in order to ensure integrity of student databases and timely and accurate delivery of funds

  • Assists CUNY staff, applicants, and students/families with advice on financial aid issues and eligibility

  • May review and reconcile student payroll processing

  • Represents the Financial Aid function at Admissions events; works with academic departments as well as Bursar, Registrar, Admissions and Computing offices to assure staff understand and implement financial aid processes correctly

  • Assists in the development and evaluation of Admissions processes

  • Prepares documentation, instructions, and materials in various media to support financial aid activities

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
