Under supervision, does gardening work, performs related work.
Plants, cultivates and cares for trees, flowers, plants, shrubs and other flora.
Digs up, balls, burlaps and transplants trees and shrubs. Digs up and transplants sod. Pots flowers and plants. Propagates plant life.
Prepares soil and seed beds. Grades, sods, weeds, mulches, and mows lawns. Repairs damaged planted areas. As necessary, fertilizes and waters soil, prunes and sprays trees, shrubs and plants.
Operates and cares for hand and power gardening tools and equipment and makes necessary operating adjustments to same; reports need for repairs and replacements.
As required, keeps simple records and makes written reports.
May supervise subordinate employees, including temporary workers, instructing them in gardening techniques and in the proper use and care of materials and equipment.
As directed, performs various tasks in connection with cleaning of grounds and painting of fixtures and equipment.
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Gardener will report to the Assistant Dean for Workforce Development and Continuing Education. Campus specific duties will include:
• Coordinating with Buildings & Grounds on overall gardening needs for the Community
Farm and Garden
• Support farming operations at the with tasks that include, but are not limited to:
planting, weeding, watering, pruning, composting, and harvesting, building beds, staking,
harvesting, starting seeds
• Support landscape management at farm and other locations with tasks that include, but
are not limited to lawn mowing, weed-whacking, raking, and sweeping.
• Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment as needed.
• Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates
• Support horticultural carpentry and masonry with projects that include, but are not
limited to constructing raised beds, building trellising structures, and installing water
features if applicable.
Two years of full-time experience in gardening work, including experience in each of the following: planting, cultivating and caring for trees, plants, shrubs and lawns; OR
Thirty credits in horticulture, agriculture or a related field from an accredited college or community college, and one year of experience as described in 1 above; OR
A certificate from a recognized horticulture or botanical program, and one year of full-time experience as described in 1 above; OR
Education and/or experience equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 above. However, candidates must have at least one year of full-time experience as described in 1 above.
A Motor Vehicle Operator's License valid in the State of New York at time of appointment.
A Commercial Pesticide Applicator Category 3A License issued by the State of New York Department of Environmental Conservation at the time of appointment.
Gardener should have knowledge in:
Organic vegetable production and greenhouse propagation; Small plot intensive gardening, crop
rotation and inter-cropping; Soil fertility management and composting.
Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions.
Ability to perform physical labor; must be able to lift to 50lbs.
Flexibility to work overtime and weekends.
Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories
*$55,092 new hire
*13% Suppressed salary rate on the first 24 months of employment
