FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college, offering 58 associate and baccalaureate degrees, invites applications for a lecturer position in the Department of Communication Design, to begin spring 2023 or fall 2023. City Tech is located in the vibrant and technologically diverse community of Downtown Brooklyn. The department is convenient to NYC’s subway system and within walking distance of the Brooklyn MetroTech and Borough Hall.

The Department of Communication Design (COMD) offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. These programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

The Communication Design department’s curriculum integrates fundamental theory and concepts with applied technology through a studio model, preparing students for careers in graphic design, advertising, motion design, illustration, and web design. We believe in building a culture that encourages creativity, collaboration, and conceptual thinking.

The position requires a commitment to teaching excellence, sustained service to the department, college and university, and regular involvement, as assigned, in academic advisement, recruitment efforts, assessment and accreditation, and self-governance. The lecturer will function collaboratively in department-level efforts, playing an active role in the creation, development, and assessment of department curricula and maintaining the academic vitality of the department. This is a full-time position that leads to a certificate of continuous employment. Day, evening, and weekend teaching and department duties may be required.

  • The ability to support the engagement and learning of a diverse student body.

  • Continued professional growth to maintain standards commensurate with industry practices.

  • The ability to engage in program development, recruitment, and student advisement. Contributions to committee work is expected, as well as other department, college, university and/or community service.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Baccalaureate degree in design or a related field of study and the ability to teach successfully.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An MFA or equivalent degree in design or a related field of study.

  • Prior teaching experience, particularly at the college level, is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in any of the following is highly desirable: design futures, including augmented reality/ virtual reality; data visualization; creative computing; product design; UX development; animation; visual communication research.

  • A sustained record of relevant professional experience in a variety of positions in the field of design. Examples of professional experience includes creative direction, art direction, graphic design, animation, motion design and production, web/interactive/UX/UI design and development, and illustration.

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range:

$69.665 - $88,998

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
