FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Mathematics Department at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York invites applications for three (3) full-time positions in Mathematics at the rank of Lecturer, beginning in the Fall 2022 semester. We seek strong, dynamic candidates with a successful teaching record in the developmental and basic mathematics courses. Candidates who can take leading roles in department initiatives are particularly encouraged to apply.

The responsibilities of the position include teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics, advising students, curricular development, and serving on departmental and college committees. This position carries a teaching load of twelve (12) contact hours per week. Lecturers reappointed to a sixth year earn a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) from CUNY, which is equivalent to tenure.

Named for the famed civil rights activist Medgar Wiley Evers, Medgar Evers College is a senior college of the City University of New York. The college is located in the vibrant Crown Heights section of Central Brooklyn. The college currently enrolls about four thousand undergraduate students. The School of Science, Health and Technology offers B.S. degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Nursing, as well as AS programs in science and AAS and PN programs in Nursing. The College and the Mathematics Department are committed to building and sustaining a culturally diverse faculty, staff, and student body. The Department of Mathematics is located in a new state-of-the-art School of Science, Health and Technology building equipped with smart classrooms, research modules and six computer labs, two of which are dedicated to the teaching of mathematics. Our philosophy is to support our majors and all students through our tutorial program, colloquia, a vibrant math club and undergraduate research. The faculty in the department conduct research in various areas of pure and applied mathematics, including algebra, geometry, representation theory, fluid dynamics, differential equations, number theory and topology, and on the teaching of mathematics. Faculty also participate in seminars at the Graduate Center, the PhD granting campus of the City University of New York.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates should have an earned master’s or doctoral degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. Applicants must provide significant evidence of achievement and potential as a mathematics educator and have a strong commitment to teaching a diverse student body. In addition, applicants must possess excellent communications skills and demonstrate outstanding teaching ability. Experience teaching courses such as college algebra, precalculus, calculus and statistics is required.
