POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) is dedicated to providing cutting edge graduate degree programs and to identifying, designing, implementing and evaluating public health initiatives that promote social justice. The mission of the school is to promote public health policies to improve the health of populations. CUNY SPH faculty members are recognized leaders in health policy, community health interventions, epidemiology and biostatistics, and public health informatics, among other areas. Faculty and students are actively engaged in promoting healthy cities in a healthy world. CUNY SPH is located in a new vertical campus in the heart of Harlem in New York City.

The Academic Advising Coordinator will report to the Academic Student Support Program Specialist.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Works with students to form academic plans.

  • Advises students both in person and remotely on degree requirements and academic policies.

  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of student activities.

  • Monitors students' performance and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements.

  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies, and guidelines.

  • Participates in orientation for new students.

  • Assists and participates in College-wide and CUNY-wide activities.

  • Provides general information on programs and services in person or by telephone, email, or letter.

  • Maintains current information about College programs and degree requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required.

Other Qualifications:

The preferred candidate must demonstrate:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office and Zoom, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed.

  • Ability to work extended hours and evening hours as needed.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working in Student Services.

  • Capacity to work efficiently and independently on multiple tasks.

  • Understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Familiarity with CUNYfirst (Peoplesoft).

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty and administrators.

  • Familiarity with the field of public health.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides basic administrative support for the academic counseling program.

  • Coordinates group student academic counseling and advisement workshops; schedules on-going advisement sessions

  • Works with students to resolve academic issues by providing policy information and/or referrals

  • Assists with training students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies

  • Conducts workshops for new faculty

  • Updates advisement communication materials

  • May conduct surveys of student services to evaluate program effectiveness; compiles data to prepare activity reports as needed

  • May occasionally offer general academic advisement to students in degree and certificate programs.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
