The Advisement Office at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs (MSPIA) supports the success of all degree program students at the School. Success itself is defined in several ways, most importantly, persistence and graduation.

The Academic Advising Services Coordinator reports to the Academic Advising Manager. In his/her role, s/he:

  • Coordinates and oversees of all academic advisement and student services for the Executive MPA program and plays a key role in the recruitment, development and cohesion of strong and viable cohorts to this elite model program.

  • Provides comprehensive advisement services to XMPA and traditional (partial) MPA program. This includes program planning, registration, orientations, and graduation audits.

  • Provides logistical and other support needed for the XMPA program (including but not limited to contracts with vendors for meals, books, travel and all other program related expenses for the XMPA).

  • Works with the XMPA faculty director on course scheduling, student development activities, faculty meetings, graduation ceremonies and other events.

  • Collaborates with faculty director in response to students with academic difficulties, and faculty and student issues.

  • Creates and maintains annual student portfolio binder for XMPA students.

  • Provides outreach to students who have not completed courses, in poor academic standing.

  • Point of contact for all aspects pertaining to Executive MPA student completion (program plans, degree audits, graduation process & workshops, record keeping, transfer credits & database, grade changes, program changes, registration issues and permissions, batch-printing, etc.).

  • Assists the Assistant Director in all aspects of New Student Events/Orientations.

This position requires some travel as well as Saturday and evening work, availability to work some nights and weekends.


Bachelor's degree required.


Two years' related student services experience strongly preferred. The individual should have excellent planning and communication skills. A substantive knowledge of spreadsheet software and word processing is essential. He/she should have an in-depth understanding of how best to maximize programmatic effectiveness in a large organization. He/she should be able to interact successfully with students, faculty, staff, and MSPIA’s constituencies from the public and nonprofit sectors. Must possess an interest in working with an ethnically and racially diverse student body and be sensitive to their needs. He/she will understand university governance structures and student registration and advisement systems. The individual should be able to produce results and respond to problems in a fast-paced environment.


Provides basic administrative support for the academic counseling program.

  • Coordinates group student academic counseling and advisement workshops; schedules on-going advisement sessions

  • Works with students to resolve academic issues by providing policy information and/or referrals

  • Assists with training students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies

  • Conducts workshops for new faculty

  • Updates advisement communication materials

  • May conduct surveys of student services to evaluate program effectiveness; compiles data to prepare activity reports as needed

  • May occasionally offer general academic advisement to students in degree and certificate programs.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
