CUNY Academic Advisor (Three Vacancies) in New York, New York


Reporting to the Director of Academic Advisement & Transfer or her designee, the successful candidate will work with the student services area, including Registrar and Testing; deliver and coordinate academic advisement and transfer services to a diverse urban community college population; and work with a large number of students on an individual and group basis.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initially meet with students and refer them to appropriate support services, if necessary.

  • Assist students with interpreting their CUNY placement scores and the remedial course sequence.

  • Assist with the delivery of transfer information sessions.

  • Provide academic audits for students preparing to apply for graduation.

  • Provide academic and transfer advisement, using various media (including e-advisement).

  • Conduct seminars and workshops on topics such as Liberal Arts Careers, Time Management, Preparing for Transfer, etc..

  • Coordinate trips to senior colleges for students looking to transfer.

  • Work closely with Admissions’ and Registrar’s Offices on recruitment and retention projects.

Evening and/or weekend hours are required.


Bachelor's Degree required.

Two years of higher education and/or academic advising experience with a diverse student population preferred. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communications and analytical skills are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft suite.


Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.

  • Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.

  • Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process

  • Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services

  • Monitors and evaluates students' educational progress by conducting academic progress audits

  • Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
