Borough of Manhattan Community College's Writing Center provides an innovative and professional environment for students to develop and strengthen their writing and English language skills in the context of their assignments and course goals. Closely connected to academic departments and other college academic support units, the Writing Center is a key component in an undergraduate education committed to student writing.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and in addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Academic Program Manager will have responsibilities that include the following:

  • Develop and oversee the Writing Center's activities and services with other learning assistance programs.

  • Perform a comprehensive evaluation of Writing Center services and programs to support improvement efforts.

  • Manage the Writing Center budget and interim and end of year reports.

  • Hire, train, and develop professional consultants and support staff.

  • Recruit, hire, schedule, train, and supervise all writing assistants.

  • Provide e-tutoring support.

  • Work with Writing Across the Curriculum Committee to facilitate workshops for faculty on developing specific writing assignments and infusing writing into their courses.

Work schedule will include some evenings and weekends.


Bachelor's Degree and six years' relevant experience required.

Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in English, Linguistics, or a related field and at least six years of full-time work experience required, preferably in a diverse, urban higher education setting.

  • Prior experience in coordinating college-level writing initiatives; experience in program evaluation.

  • Strong managerial, organizational, oral, and written skills required.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.

  • Knowledge of Blackboard a plus.

  • Knowledge of software for writing instruction, e.g. Easy Writer, Learning Curve preferred.


Manages curriculum development and operations of a College's specialized academic program under the direction of a senior administrator.

  • Implements and monitors a comprehensive academic program development plan; makes recommendations to improve department policies and procedures

  • Assists Director with outcome assessment and strategic planning to further develop program offerings

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Serves as resource expert regarding program policies and procedures

  • May manage professional and/or clerical staff

  • May act on behalf of Director in his/her absence

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
