POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY), is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. Our innovative curriculum allows students to complete both their undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees in seven years. CSOM will graduate its first MD class in 2020. CSOM also has a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies (PA). Our PA Program is a 28-month graduate program leading to a M.S. degree and certification as a Physician Assistant pending successful completion of the -hysician Assistant National Certifying Examination. We are one of the first degree-granting physician assistant programs in the country. Our mission is to provide access to medical education to talented youth from social, ethnic and racial backgrounds historically under-represented in medicine and to develop health professionals committed to practicing in under-served communities with a special emphasis on primary care. With our reputation for excellence we have earned national acclaim for performance and a broad network of clinical sites for clerkships.

The Academic Senior Advisor (Learning Specialist) will report to the Director of the Learning Resource Center at the CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM). The ideal candidate is a dynamic individual with excellent interpersonal and group communication skills. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Explore student's individual learning preferences during one-on-one meetings, and develop strategies for improvement appropriate to students learning needs.

  • Collaboratively work with students to design specific study plans based on individual needs.

  • Develop and implement course review sessions, innovative workshops, and dynamic online modules to improve and enhance learning strategies in a diverse and young student population.

  • Evaluate and address common issues that individual students experience, such as test taking skills and test anxiety, effective study skills and strategies, learning process skills, adjustment to medical school workload, organizational skills, and stress and time management.

  • Participate in early identification of students with academic difficulty.

  • Monitor student academic progress for students at risk and/or on academic probation, or prescription year.

  • Serve as Tutor Coordinator – assign and oversee student study groups and tutoring sessions, conduct tutor training workshops, manage tutoring evaluations, and supervise tutors. Maintain good communication with tutees.

  • Work with other Learning Specialists and faculty in the implementation of the Summer Sophie Davis Pre-Matriculation Program for incoming CSOM students.

  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure appropriate referrals to various university support services such as, tutoring, personal counseling and/or mental health services, Disability Resources Center, academic advising, and career advice.

  • Conduct appropriate academic and cognitive assessments and evaluations.

  • Identify supplemental course materials and learning resources.

  • Maintain comprehensive records of all student contacts and counseling sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students

  • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses

  • Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements

  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits

  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines

  • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling

  • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses

  • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed

  • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling

  • May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
