CUNY Assistant or Associate Professor - Civil Engineering in New York, New York


The Department of Civil Engineering of the City College of New York/CUNY is seeking to fill a faculty position in Transportation Engineering. Candidates with expertise and experience in the broad areas of transportation engineering, planning, operations, and/or management are encouraged to apply. Appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level is expected, beginning in Fall 2019.

The successful applicant will teach fundamental undergraduate and advanced graduate level courses in Transportation Engineering. City College faculty typically engage in a wide variety of research efforts with international, national, regional, and local agencies as well as private entities to address the complex demands of and challenges posed by the multimodal transportation needs of the nation's largest city. The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally funded research program that is complementary to existing departmental expertise in transportation planning, advanced traffic engineering, connected and automated vehicle operations, advanced travel behavior modeling, freight transportation and city logistics, and innovative transit system planning and management. Specific areas of interest to the department include, but are not limited to: new traffic and travel behavior modeling and Infrastructure system management approaches that leverage emerging data streams; human factors analysis; sustainable transportation infrastructure design; transit system operations and management; and planning, design, and evaluation of smart city and shared economy innovations. In addition to teaching and research, the candidate will be expected to be active in departmental and professional service.

The City College of New York (CCNY) is a flagship campus of the City University of New York (CUNY), located between West 130th and West 140th streets in Manhattan. The Department of Civil Engineering at the CCNY Grove School of Engineering offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering ( and houses several CCNY and CUNY led centers and institutes, including the University Transportation Research Center, the Institute for Transportation Systems, NOAA-CREST, the Environmental Crossroads Initiative, the Center for Water Resources and Environmental Research, and the CUNY Institute for Urban Systems. The department currently has 19 full-time Civil Engineering faculty members in three areas of concentration (Structures, Transportation, and Environmental/Water Resources).


Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering or closely related field required and eligible to obtain a PE License. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
