CUNY Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) - Biology in New York, New York
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, City University of New York, seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biology. This appointment will begin in fall 2019. General responsibilities of all full-time Guttman faculty include teaching courses in the First-Year Experience as part of an instructional team, teaching courses in the majors, and advising students. For this position, the successful candidate will teach courses in general biology for majors and non-majors, anatomy and physiology, genetics, and/or microbiology.
As the newest community college in the CUNY system, Guttman’s mission emphasizes student success as manifest in learning and degree completion and a commitment to helping students reach professional and educational goals. Our students primarily take general education and lower division courses for university transfer. The instructional model combines high impact educational practices, including learning communities, peer mentoring, experiential learning, ePortfolio, and full-time first year attendance. Academic technology is particularly emphasized in the delivery and assessment of student learning and advising. Faculty collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment as part of a first year instructional team, and in a limited number of Programs of Study, rather than traditional academic departments. In addition to teaching and scholarship, appropriate service is an important component of expected faculty effort.
The College strives to create and to maintain an inclusive learning environment. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and cross-cultural competence in educational and workplace environments. Guttman Community College is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution with a culturally diverse student body drawn from across New York City. A majority of our students enroll directly out of high school. Faculty members must demonstrate the ability to use effective pedagogical approaches and technology-based strategies that support the success of all students and a variety of learning styles. Please visit our website for the latest information on Guttman’s enrollment and student data to learn more about our growing institution: http://guttman.cuny.edu/about/.
Faculty on tenure-track appointments receive reassigned time to pursue scholarship. A record of scholarly production, whether in the faculty member's disciplinary field or in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, is required for tenure and promotion.
Ph.D. degree in Biology or related field (awarded by start of fall, 2019-2020 academic year) and at least two years of successful teaching experience in a college setting (full-time or part-time) required. Due to the interdisciplinary organization of the college, the ability to collaborate well with others in academics, student services, and administration is expected.

Willingness to conduct research with students in and outside of classroom environments
Demonstrated capacity to use a diverse range of effective student-centered instructional strategies and openness to adopting new practices
