Macaulay Honors College at CUNY is inviting applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Advancement and Communications to help lead the college through a critical time of change as we pursue external resources to meet students' needs, elevate the profile of the College, and carry out the College and University's strategic priorities. Reporting to the Dean of Macaulay Honors College and working closely with the Chair of the Macaulay Honors College Foundation Board, the Associate Dean provides strategic leadership in fundraising, board development and relations, alumni affairs, and communications. The Associate Dean oversees a team of 9 professional staff responsible for advancement and fundraising, communications, prestigious events and public programming, and digital media. The college currently raises approximately $1 million annually and is expected to grow by a minimum of 50% in the first year of new Advancement leadership.
As a member of the college’s senior leadership team, the Associate Dean for Advancement and Communications is a key thought partner to the Dean and other senior leaders, helping to create and realize the vision for the future of the college. Through the execution of the Advancement and Communications portfolio, the Associate Dean champions the academic mission of the college and works to build community across the enterprise. The Associate Dean also provides high-level support to the Dean in their role as the principal external relations officer of the college. Priorities for the position include expanding and diversifying the donor base, securing major gifts, stewarding major donors and developing a pipeline of new ones, maintaining productive relationships with strategic partners, and harnessing the power of digital communications to enhance the visibility of the college’s impact. The Associate Dean also plays a vital role in enhancing collaborations throughout the Macaulay consortium and community.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provides strategic leadership and management of the Office of Advancement and Communications, overseeing all fundraising, alumni affairs, foundation board relations, and internal and external communications;
Oversees planning and execution of individual, corporate, government, and foundation fundraising activities including cultivation and stewardship, expanding and diversifying the donor base, and ensuring that fundraising goals are established and met;
Oversees the creation and management of new and existing programs and initiatives, such as the Annual Fund campaign and CUNY Giving Tuesday, that increase donor participation and generate new resources;
Leads the development of a diverse, inclusive, engaged board for the Macaulay Honors College Foundation to enhance fundraising and community relations;
Upon approval of the foundation board, serves as Executive Director of the Macaulay Honors College Foundation, maintaining a strong and transparent relationship with the board; and oversee management of the foundation’s operations including developing the annual foundation budget, ensuring compliance with all college and university policies, and working with the Chair of the Board and the college’s Associate Dean for Finance to ensure sound fiscal management;
Develops and oversees execution of strategies to engage the alumni community and grow alumni participation and giving;
Oversees the development and distribution of all internal and external communications, special events, public programming, media and public relations, dean’s communications, digital media, social media, and crisis communications activities, ensuring the College’s public face—online and through the media—is consistent with its mission and supports the achievement of its fundraising goals;
Works with the Office of the Dean and others to engage with local, state, and federal elected officials and to secure government discretionary and capital funding;
Provides exemplary leadership to the Advancement and Communications team, ensuring that the unit has the necessary personnel and administrative resources to successfully execute the mission of the office;
Serves as liaison to CUNY Central Office on matters related to development, fundraising, public affairs, and communications;
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the landscape of college and public institutional advancement and communications, and a demonstrated commitment to furthering access and excellence for underrepresented students. They are entrepreneurial, innovative, and passionate about the role development plays in student success; expert in fundraising ethics, research, and cultivation and solicitation practices; and adept at driving creative, innovative digital communications campaigns to achieve institutional goals. They collaborate effectively, have a strong record of building successful teams and diverse networks of internal and external partners, and actively foster an atmosphere in which diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging thrive.
A preferred candidate should have these additional qualifications:
An advanced degree and at least ten years of senior-level managerial experience in complex, diverse organizational settings in both the non-profit and higher education sectors.
A proven track record in multi-platform fundraising.
Leadership experience in advancement, development, and alumni relations.
Demonstrated expertise in board relations and board development.
Superior written and spoken communication skills.
Proven history of leading and managing successful teams.
Evidence of exceptional ability to work effectively with constituent groups and partners, both internal and external.
Demonstrated success identifying, cultivating, and securing 6- and 7-figure gifts.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$150,000 - $170,000. Salary commensurate with education and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE : Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.
If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.
Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
