SLU is CUNY’s twenty-fifth and newest school. It is dedicated to public service and social justice and provides unique and exceptional programs for working adults and traditional-age college students who seek to address the challenges confronting poor and working-class populations. Its faculty includes some of the most innovative and distinguished scholars in the social sciences, as well as expert practitioners in the fields of government, labor, and public service.

SLU currently offers two unique semester-long experiential learning programs that combine rigorous academic study with hands-on experience and opportunities to gain the academic and practical skills to effect change. Students in both programs intern under the supervision of a mentor, receive a stipend, enroll in four courses at either the undergraduate or graduate level, and earn a certificate either in Labor Studies or Community Leadership. The Union Semester program pairs students from across the country and around the world with labor unions and worker-rights organizations to learn firsthand the strategies these organizations use to fight for worker rights. The Community Semester program provides local students with an opportunity to learn how community-based organizations fight for social and economic justice, housing rights, immigrant rights, tenants’ rights, and community empowerment. Additional internships are being developed with city and state legislative bodies and agencies.

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies seeks an Associate Director to design, implement and manage its Union and Community Semester Programs, and to develop other specialized internship programs.

The Associate Director will:

  • Develop a strategic plan to grow existing internship programs and expand experiential learning opportunities at SLU generally.

  • Promote SLU’s national reputation as a place for experiential learning, especially as it relates to organizations that advocate for social justice and make or implement change, eg., unions, community groups, legislative bodies, and governmental agencies.

  • Establish and cultivate a range of union relationships and community partnerships to support internships, service, and experiential learning opportunities.

  • Proactively identify and resolve issues that may include problem-solving with external partners, referring students to support services, etc.

  • Recruit and communicate with students through information sessions, pre-career workshops, orientations, advising/mentoring, individual check-ins, etc.

  • Create an internship policy manual.

  • Develop marketing and advertising strategies in multiple media formats to promote SLU’s experiential learning programs.

  • Collaborate with all program participants, including partner organizations and mentors, to set program goals, create suitable matches, and oversee, assess, and monitor placements.

  • Manage daily operations, including the application process, student data, community programs, and partner arrangements.

  • Oversee development and use of learning assessments and report findings to identify issues and drive continuous improvement.

  • Assist with program planning, budgeting, and funding/grant development.

The Associate Director for Internships and Experiential Learning may supervise staff. Flexibility to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends is required.



Bachelor’s degree and six years’ related experience required.


  • Advanced degree in a related discipline preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability in building and managing programs, including but not limited to: recruiting students: research and evaluation; interpersonal communication and facilitation skills; organization and management skills: the use of workplace technologies.

  • Strong writing skills.

  • A work style that promotes relationships within and outside the organization.

  • Work experience covering: Developing, implementing, and managing college-level student academic and co-curricular learning experiences, internship, recruiting or unions, community organization, and government agencies; Experience with labor unions and/or community agencies; Academic advising, service learning and mentoring of adults; Developing data reporting, assessment, and evaluation methods; Designing marketing campaigns, performing community outreach, building, and managing relationships with organizations across multiple sectors, and writing grants.

The ability to work within a global context and a high level of cultural sensitivity are highly desirable.


Manages College's academic internship program which provides career development opportunities and professional work experiences for students.

  • Develops and administers a comprehensive internship program based on students' field of study

  • Develops assessment tools to analyze and monitor student career development progress; recommends various enhancements to improve students experiences; and analyzes job market trends to determine solutions in response to market conditions

  • Administers the on-campus recruiting program for internships; initiates and maintains communications with employer sponsors; and schedules student interviews; creates and leads student career workshops

  • Provides faculty development related to internships and tracks credit-bearing internships

  • Collaborates with the other College offices to facilitate student outreach and connection with employers for professional development, internships and job opportunities

  • Cultivates relationships with alumni, faculty, administration and students to improve and increase internship offerings

  • May manage professional and/or clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after July 1, 2019 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period.

An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted.
