POSITION DETAILS

The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College is a beacon of innovation and knowledge creation in higher education, a two-year college where evidence-based high-impact practices in curriculum design and delivery permeate the educational model and have yielded graduation rates that are the highest in CUNY’s community college sector and above the national average. The centerpiece of Guttman’s educational model is an integrated first-year core curriculum, where students examine current world issues and use New York City as a living text and laboratory. This immersive approach equips Guttman students with the foundation of knowledge and skills essential to their intellectual, social, civic, and professional endeavors in and beyond the classroom. The College admitted its first cohort of 300 students in August 2012 and has established an enrollment target of approximately 5,000 students in the coming years. The Office of Advising & Transfer Support offers a number of specialized programs, workshops, and events to provide Guttman Community College students with academic, professional and transfer support throughout their time at Guttman. Reporting to the Director of Advising & Transfer Support, the Associate Director of Advising & Transfer Support works with the Director to manage and enhance a holistic strategy to impact enrollment and support student success.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Associate Director is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Facilitate educational planning and registration of students by coordinating advising operations with other College enrollment areas, including Admissions and Access, Registrar, Financial Aid and Bursar; serve on Enrollment Health & Retention Working Group; and periodically attend Department/Program/Area Coordinator meetings.

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of workshops and seminars on best advising practices, utilization of web-based platforms such as DegreeWorks/CUNYfirst, major declaration, exploring career options, personal development, transfer to baccalaureate programs, scholarship opportunities, and other relevant academic and career topics.

  • Hire, supervise, train, and mentor full-time and part-time staff.

  • Coordinate programs in collaboration with the Division of Academic Affairs.

  • Manage scholarship support programming for the advising office, including collaboration with Financial Aid and external partners to present scholarship opportunities and facilitate scholarship applications.

  • Support readmission procedures and readmission orientation in collaboration with other enrollment areas.

  • Report on activities and outcomes using best practices in academic advising and program assessment; make recommendations on program enhancements.

  • Serve as lead for transfer support programs, including transfer fairs and transfer days, the Transfer Bridge Program, and external opportunities, in coordination with faculty and other staff.

  • Create and maintain an Advising Manual to guide the work of the office; ensure advising guidelines are followed.

  • Serve on appropriate College and University Committees, including CUNY Advising Council and CUNY Transfer Council.

Note:

  • Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

  • Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and six years’ related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six or more years of counseling, academic, and/or career advising/student development experience with diverse student populations, particularly with under-prepared high school or college students in an educational setting or program, preferred

  • Evidence of progressive managerial responsibilities

  • Master's degree in related area

  • Crisis management experience

  • Experience working in learning communities

  • Multilingual ability preferred with strong presentation, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to successfully work with and present to diverse audiences

  • Experience working well with linguistically, culturally, and academically diverse students

  • Strong work ethic, character and personal integrity, and ability to work with the utmost professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality

  • Detail-oriented with strong writing, analytical, evaluative, and organizational skills

  • Ability to work well in a time-sensitive, dynamic, student-centered, and responsive office

  • Flexibility to work evening hours and occasional weekends

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Manages the development and operations of academic counseling services.

  • Develops and coordinates campus efforts to provide a comprehensive academic advisement model and protocol; assists with strategic planning

  • Supervises an academic advisement center; oversees counseling activities to provide consistently reliable information to students

  • Works with academic departments to develop faculty advisement components

  • Collaborates with other campus offices to provide smooth and coordinated access to academic counseling services in order to enhance student performance and retention

  • Develops workshops and other training to utilize advising technologies

  • Oversees the development of advisement brochures and sample study programs

  • Assesses academic counseling activities by tracking student progress and evaluating advisement system; recommends enhancements

  • Organizes and facilitates ongoing training on use of advising technologies

  • May manage professional and clerical staff; may monitor unit budget

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
