FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM) at The City College of New York (CCNY) located in the heart of Harlem, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system. CSOM values diversity and inclusion and believes they are essential to achieving excellence. There is a continuing shortage of primary care physicians in this country, creating an urgent need for more family practitioners, general internists, pediatricians and obstetrician/gynecologists in many communities. The shortage of African-American, Latinx, and others underrepresented medical professionals in inner city areas is particularly acute. Over forty years ago, City College decided to make a difference by developing the most unique physician training program in the nation, The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, which in the fall of 2017 became – The CUNY School of Medicine. Since its founding, the school has been committed to recruiting underrepresented populations into medicine, increasing medical services in under served areas, and increasing the availability of primary care physicians. We seek candidates whose research, teaching and/or service has prepared them to contribute to this overall mission.
CSOM is searching for a visionary and inspiring leader to Chair its Department of Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM). The Department plays a critical and leading role in our mission-driven BS/MD program aimed at recruiting those who are under-represented in medicine and producing broadly educated, highly skilled primary care practitioners to provide patient-centered community oriented care to underserved communities. The Medical School’s curriculum is centered on a comprehensive effort to educate our students in the social, economic, political, and behavioral determinants of health and disease, with a focus on population health, health disparities and health care policy. The Department research agenda is centered on chronic disease epidemiology, health behavior, health policy, health services and community based research.
The strategic vision for CHASM includes:
a) Strengthening of the educational mission to incorporate methodological skills throughout the curriculum;
b) Strengthening of the current research foci and expansion of its research portfolio to include broader aspects of epidemiology and behavioral medicine, including clinical epidemiology.
This expansion would take place by broadening and strengthening collaborations with other academic departments/institutions within and outside CUNY, public health organizations, foundations, and our affiliated clinical centers. Faculty in this title perform teaching, research, patient care, and guidance duties at CSOM. They will share responsibility for committee, program, and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.
M.D. (preferred) or Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Public Health, Public Policy or a closely related field from an accredited university with a record of exceptional intellectual, educational, and professional achievement.
Candidates should have the following:
demonstrated commitment to building and promoting equitable, diverse and inclusive scholarly and work environments and must be willing to contribute to the CSOM’s diversity and inclusion goals.
demonstrated or promised evidence of significant success developing and teaching courses that inclusively and equitably serve a diverse student population, interest in productive scholarship, and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.
must possess extensive experience in one of the research areas outlined above, with an established and current record of extramurally, peer-reviewed funded research, along with a record of administrative/leadership experience.
must have a thorough understanding and appreciation of the relevance of public health and social aspects of health in the education of culturally competent health practitioners.
must have the record of scholarly accomplishment sufficient to support appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor at CCNY. Also required are demonstrated or promised evidence of success as a teacher and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
The preferred candidate will have proven outstanding leadership, team building, and organizational skills as well as demonstrated experience working with diverse groups/students. We seek candidates whose research, teaching and/or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse audiences in medical education.
