FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Division of Humanities and the Arts at The City College of New York (CCNY) announces an open-field search for a visionary leader and teacher-scholar to serve as director/chair of the College’s Black Studies Program, to lead the Program in becoming an academic department, and then to serve as its chair. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who would like to shape Black Studies at City College into a leader in the discipline. The successful candidate may represent any discipline or field connected to Black Studies in the Humanities and the Arts. The position will begin in the summer of 2023.
Responsibilities include leadership of the Black Studies Program; teaching courses in Black Studies; developing curricula; supervising and mentoring faculty; advising students; participating in campus-wide committees; publicizing Black Studies, its programs, and events; research, scholarship and/or creative activity; and service to the College and profession. A collaborative and team-oriented spirit is essential.
City College pioneered Black Studies in the aftermath of protests that took place at CCNY in 1969. The Black Studies Program has been an area of growth in the Division of Humanities and Arts and City College; it currently attracts more than a thousand students each year to its classes. The College and the Division of Humanities and the Arts are currently working to build the Program into a Black Studies Department that collaborates extensively with other departments. The Black Studies Program runs our annual Langston Hughes Festival, which since 1978 has celebrated the literary legacy of the poet laureate of Harlem by awarding a medal to the most distinguished writers of the African diaspora. City College is also home to the Dominican Studies Institute, the nation’s first university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the world.
Founded in 1847, CCNY is a public institution with public purpose, producing citizens who make an impact on the cultural, social, and economic vitality of New York, the nation, and the world. Located in Harlem, we are a Minority-Serving Institution, and 66% of our full-time undergraduates attend the college tuition free. We work to integrate the city’s cultural resources into our humanities curricula and, in turn, to graduate students who are prepared to serve as the curators, directors, archivists, educators, and stewards of New York City’s cultural heritage.
PHD in a related field; excellent scholarly record that warrants tenure and the rank of associate or full professor; commitment to teaching, research, and service; support for interdisciplinary research and teaching; and commitment to building and administering a program that serves diverse constituencies.
Preferred qualifications include administrative experience as program director, coordinator and/or department chair; experience in college-wide faculty governance and/or curriculum bodies; and experience in a collective-bargaining environment. Priority will be given to applicants whose research and teaching compliments existing offerings of the Black Studies Program, including, but not limited to the exploration of Afro-Latin America/Afro-Latine Studies, Black Queer Studies, and Black Expressive Cultures.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
Associate professor: $67,784- $117,805

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.
If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.
Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
