FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Classics Program of Hunter College, City University of New York, invites applications for the Bluhm Chair in Classics at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank beginning in fall 2023. We welcome scholars with different specializations related to the ancient Mediterranean world, but we have a particular need for a specialist in archaeology. The normal teaching load would be two courses per semester. The successful candidate will oversee the Bluhm Scholars Cohort, a group of 15 to 30 high-achieving students in the Classics. This cohort engages in numerous extracurricular activities and receives additional advising throughout the year. In addition to maintaining a strong program of research and publication, the successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels and in some of the following areas: archaeology, Latin at the MA level, Greek and Roman literature in translation, classical civilization courses, and specialized topic courses. Hunter is connected to the CUNY Graduate Center. Some future teaching in CUNY’s MA/PhD Program in Classics may be possible.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Associate or Full Professor:

PhD degree with the rank of associate professor or full professor in Classics or a related field is required. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence or strong promise of excellence in both research and publication and in the teaching of ancient history, Greek, and Latin.

Applicants should have an excellent record of scholarly publication and effectiveness in teaching; ideal candidate will be tenure eligible.

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

COMPENSATION

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.. Compensation is commensurate with experience within the range for this title:

Associate Professor: $66,455 - $115,496

Full Professor: $82,233 - $139,076
