Under supervision, Broadcast Associates perform technical work in a broadcasting operation and/or production environment. Such duties include designing, installing, operating, maintaining and/or modifying all types of broadcast equipment and related software.

There are three Assignment Levels for Broadcast Associate (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3). All personnel perform related work.

Assignment Level 1: Under direct supervision, performs technical and operational tasks of ordinary difficulty related to the dissemination, duplication and broadcasting of video and audio signals. May perform work with either existing or emerging media technology as needed to operate station. Takes direction/instruction from the director and producer. Interact effectively with other members of the broadcast operation including actors and interviewees.

Assignment Level 2: Under general to limited supervision, performs complex technical work requiring considerable knowledge of studio and production operations. Functions as part of the production team as a video or audio technician and/or lighting grip. Works in remote field production locations, establishing field production systems and operating units.

Assignment Level 3: Under limited supervision, performs the most complex technical work associated with broadcast operations. Manages designs and implements all aspects of work performed by Level 1 and Level 2 Broadcast Associates. Directs technical staff. May function as general shift manager or as manager of a specific technical area.

Broadcast Associate




CUNY TV, the television station of The City University of New York, operates Broadcast Channel 25.3 in the region and cable channel 75 throughout the five boroughs. The stations are on-the-air 24 X 7 X 365 with programs that are rarely found in traditional television reporting.

CUNYTV seeks a Videographer who will shoot video footage (interviews/events/live action/B-roll/green screen/etc.) with little to no support; both in office, studio, and on-location. Assess and resolves technical and creative issues. Actively maintains expertise in the latest technology trends, techniques, and tools related to planning and recording of audio and video elements.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Videographer will be responsible for, but not limited, to the following:

  • Operates ENG, studio cameras, and audio equipment

  • Assembles and sets up equipment

  • Follows camera scripts

  • Creatively frames and captures action

  • Responds quickly to directions

  • Liaise with producers, directors, editors and studio staff


Assignment Level-1

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of full-time satisfactory related experience,


  • An Associate Degree and/or 60 college credits from an accredited college in a related field and one year of full-time equivalent experience in a television broadcast environment,


  • A BA degree from an accredited college with a baccalaureate major in a related field.

Assignment Level-2

  • Qualification requirements for Level 1 plus the following: Two additional years of directly related full-time equivalent experience,


  • A Master's-level degree (such as MFA or MS) from an accredited college in a related field and one year of directly related full-time equivalent experience.

Assignment Level-3

  • Qualification requirements for Level 1 and Level 2 plus the following: Three additional years of directly related full-time equivalent experience.

All Level

  • Some positions may require a current, valid New York State motor vehicle license.


Bachelor’s degree or higher in communications, art, film, broadcast, TV, cinematography, media production, or related field is preferred.

  • At least 3 years of ENG videography, cinematography and similar camera operator experience working on short-form television, digital content, social media, and/or in an internal corporate media production environment

  • Proficiency with digital video cameras (including but not limited to SONY FS7, SONY FS5, SONY EX3 and the like), lighting techniques and audio recording, as well as the ability to know/use/learn new software in the future

  • Demonstrated experience with creative video & audio recording techniques through proper equipment manipulation & set-up, indoor/outdoor scene lighting, clean audio recording, as well as a command of shot framing; knowledge and efficiency in use of pro video accessories to achieve stylized shots

  • Experience troubleshooting and solving issues with cameras, grip & electric gear, audio equipment and the like

  • Must be creative, highly motivated and action oriented

  • Must be able to take direction, adhere to a schedule and meet deadlines

  • Ability to work within a team as well as work independently with minimal supervision, as needed

  • Editing experience a plus

  • Ability to anticipate and effectively communicate and solve practical & creative problems or issues

  • Strong attention to detail


New Hire Minimum Salary: $58,543 (for external hires; 13% salary suppression in effect for first two years of employment). Incumbent Minimum Salary: $66,154 (for current CUNY employees).
