POSITION DETAILS

The Tutor Corps Program at CUNY mobilizes the talent and energy of undergraduate and graduate students to increase the academic success of students in NYC public schools, in support of New York City's Algebra for All and Computer Science for All initiatives. Students from CUNY colleges who are currently majoring in STEM disciplines, particularly math and computer science, are matched with NYC Department of Education middle and high school classrooms across the city to provide technical expertise to teachers and students throughout the school year. Tutor Corps’ first full year of operation was in the 2017-18 academic year, with 125 tutors from 18 CUNY campuses working in over 65 NYC DOE schools. In the 2018-19 academic year, the program will provide 360 tutors to 120 host schools.

The Tutor Corps Campus Liaison analyzes existing academic, professional and personal support systems within different CUNY campuses and works with the Coordinator of Tutor Support to match tutors with the appropriate resources. The position reports to the Tutor Corps Program Director. Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Assist with developing, implementing and improving support strategies offered to Tutor Corps tutors including developing best practices to communicate available services and benefits according to CUNY campus.

  • Organize Borough-wide events, rallying the necessary support from campuses to meet the needs of the Recruitment Specialist, the Instructional Services Managers and the Coordinator of Tutor Support.

  • Conduct information sessions for members of the math, computer science and education departments on different CUNY campuses as well as meet with provosts or deans as necessary to advocate for the needs of Tutor Corps on the campus.

  • Analyze the efficacy of Tutor Corps support strategies in meeting tutor graduation targets and requirements for internship programs and STEM degrees on each campus.

  • Work with Tutor Corps Coordinator of Tutor Support to monitor tutor degree progress and support needs.

  • Research and learn current information about CUNY colleges’ STEM programs, degree requirements, and academic and social supports for students.

  • Maintain regular communications with various campus academic departments, offices, and centers to promote targeted academic and social support.

  • Create and maintain a campus database of degree requirements, support resources, and knowledgeable personnel.

  • Create presentations and reports, and maintain all records and statistical data on tutor retention and matriculation.

  • Assist with drafting and updating tutor handbook information and supporting social media efforts.

  • Actively participate in the larger efforts, activities and projects of the Office of K-16 Initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM Bachelor’s degree required. OTHER

  • Two (2) years’ related work experience in post-secondary education preferred.

  • Undergraduate major, minor or background in a STEM or education related subject preferred.

  • Experience building/maintaining a large professional network.

  • Strong interpersonal communication, presentation and networking skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic student and customer focused office with a diverse community of learners, faculty and staff in a large centralized public university system.

  • Detail oriented and accurate with excellent research, analysis and data management skills.

  • Strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills.

  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills to execute work plans, prioritize work, coordinate multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

  • Computer proficiency using administrative, financial or academic programs, systems or databases, plus Google Docs, social media platforms and CRM tools.

  • Ability to travel across the five boroughs of New York City.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides basic operational and analytical support related to a College's specialized academic program.

  • Supports the directors and managers with orientation preparation, student advisement regarding program requirements, and providing basic information about financial aid and registration

  • Manages office records including faculty files; prepares reports and surveys; collects and maintains statistical data on program activities

  • Serves as liaison to various College offices to provide service delivery and appropriate referrals to students

  • Collects and reviews syllabi to ensure compliance with standards

  • Serves as resource person for students and faculty regarding program policies and procedures

  • May supervise office operations and/or monitor department budget

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
